The price difference is kinda large. 2000 from the DSR and around 800 for a DV VCR

I just need something to log and capture, while the DSR is popoluar, the dv deck is kind of a money saver. I mean after it does a firewire port. eh?

anyone tried it? same results? yada yada?

Are you thinking of the JVC HR-DVS3?

Differences: A well built deck should be both faster at seeking, as well as more durable.

Personally, I've been using my old Sony DCR-PC9 as my deck. It is awkward to get the tapes in and out, but seems to work fine.

If it works right :-) the DV VCR is probably at least as good as a regular camcorder. I have no idea how robust or reliable it is.

The DSR-11 is the Sony pro-mechanism scaled down, while the consumer grade DV decks are exactly that. However, if it works for you, go for it. If the Sony G300 was still made, that would be a great choice.

As others have pointed out, the DSR is a pro mechanism, while many of these cheap DV decks are camcorder mechanisms or light duty in design.

The DSR can play both formats, but the reason I keep one around is because it can play and record both NTSC and PAL. This has been very handy on occasions, like capturing a PAL DV or DVCAM tape to edit in NTSC, or to output an NTSC program out to PAL.
