DSR Playback limitation problems.

I didn't know where the hell to post this here since it's not a DVX related issue. So I'm posting it here.

I have a DSR 40. Whether I just play straight from a timeline or even edit to tape, my DSR40 kicks back into auto rewind between 43-45 minutes instead of going the full hour. Or at least 55 minutes range.

Any ideas? I tried this on a Sony Premium and Panasonic MQ tape of 2 different projects.

I try to re-record starting where it kicks out, but still goes to auto re-wind. Also, I know the tape is not going to the end because I am sending the same timecode from FCP.

Any takers? I'm starting to get worried. This goes for both sequences for entire clip and ins/out point set.

Thanks in advance

You're recording in DVCAM mode. DVCAM runs the tape through the machine faster. A 60-minute DV tape will last 40 minutes in DVCAM. Conversely, a 40-minute DVCAM tape will last for 60 minutes in a DV camera.

I don't remember the particulars of the DSR-40... is it dual DV/DVCAM? Many of Sony's newer decks are. If it is, try to make sure you're recording in DV mode.

If it's not dual-mode, then there's no way you'll get 60 minutes on a miniDV tape.

Barry,
Thanks for the info.
The DSR 40 takes in DVCam and MiniDV.

I just can't figure out where to change the speed to SP. :/
Checked the manual but I can't find it anywhere.

For clarification: DVCAM isn't a tape size. There's DV and miniDV, there's DVCAM and miniDVCAM. Either format can be recorded on either tape size.

So just because you put in a small tape, doesn't mean you're recording DV data. It may still be recording DVCAM data onto that tape.

I looked on Sony's site, couldn't see any info for a DSR40. There's a DSR45, but not a DSR40. So I don't know what that deck can or cannot do.

There should be a DV/DVCAM switch on it, or there should be a menu item that lets you choose between DV or DVCAM. Don't go looking for SP, that's irrelevant (DVCAM decks will only ever record DV at SP speed anyway). You're looking for DV or DVCAM, and you have to set it to DV.

If the deck can even do DV. The earliest DVCAM decks couldn't. The DSR30 definitely can't.
