DSLR Camera with a preamp vs an external recorder

What is going to give me more noise-free audio?

A DSLR camera (lets say canon t2i) with an XLR adaptor (beachtek dxa-5da) to a cheap pre-amp (nady dmp2) sending a line level signal back to the camera, or ...

a midlevel external recorder (tascam dr-100)?

Thanks

You are planning to use external mics right??

DR-100 probably, likely, maybe.

I am not sure about the actual recording capabilities of the t2i. But by the time you buy a beachtek and your preamp, you might think about a decent mixer which might shift the decision in favor the t2i for recording.

Save up the money and get a MixPre and an external recorder. With Pluarleyes, it doesn't make sense to record to the camera to sync in post. You'll get MUCH better results with the MixPre and external recorder (DR-100, H4n, etc.) than if you were to get a juicelink or beachtek. Just my 2 cents...

I don't believe the t2i acceptes line level signals at its audio input so you'll need to pad any preamp's output back down again to mic level to avoid overload anyway. Audio input to the camera is going to go through its preamps regardless, so if the objective is to bypass them, it ain't gonna work like that.. Frankly I don't understand why you would think a cheap preamp would be better than a Juicedlink in the first place. The Nady doesn't offer anything such as metering, monitoring, channel routing, or low-cut filtering that are useful for on-location recording.

Yes I just found out that t2i only accepts a mic level input, which sucks.

So it seems like I am going to definitely do an external recorder to get the best quality sound.
