Dropping frames in FCP

I have been having problems with dropped frames while capturing DV-footage from my DVX-100 to FCP, and I am almost sure it has to do with the heads being dirty. I called a video service place and they said they charge $287 for check-up and cleaning. Is this something that I can do myself or possibly cheaper at another place? I live in L.A.

I have tried everything else the FCP online Help advice you to check and it is still dropping frames. I am not having a bunch of tracks or projects opened at same time, I turned off "unlimited RT" etc. It also says that most problems with dropping frames has to do with hardware configuration. What can I do about that? or fragmentation of drives?
Could there be settings on the camera Im not aware of. I havent always had these problems so something must have gone wrong?

I would be grateful for any answers. Thanks/ Bean

The $287 is worth the work.

Fragmented drives are a thing of the past with Macs, don't bother with that anymore.

Double check all settings, and get the camera serviced.

In fact, I have a local Canon repair center who is refusing to do this for some old GL-1's I want to sell off. I'm about to contact Canon and ask them what the deal iw with authorized service centers refusing to work on my Canon stuff.

Re: dropped frames AND fragmented drives

Thank you for your reply.
So, are fragmented drives a thing of the past when it comes to external hard drives as well? I have a brand new drive that it was dropping frames on as well when I captured to it.. Any advice of what drives are the best for MAc's to stay away from troubles?
Well, Im gonna get the heads cleaned on the camera again.
Thank you for your advice/ Bean

What format was your brand new drive? Firewire 800 drives that are 7500rpm on G5's should work just fine.

Also, what model of Mac do you have, and how much RAM installed? Those can effect performance, too.

Re: dropped frames AND fragmented drives

The new drive I have is a Micronet minimate, and Im using a MacMini with 1gb ram installed. The minimate drive has 250GB and 7200rpm.
I have tried capturing with a different camera and it works almost perfect, a few dropped frames though...

-has this been happening from the outset?
-was it all working fine and then suddenly your system drops frames
-are you capturing bit's and pieces or are you just using "capture now"

a mac mini should be ok to capture - but which one are we talking about ?

please try and give us a more comprehensive background to the workflow and details on how you are processing footage.

You will not be able to batch capture with your system in my opinion. I know this was the root of all my problems - it seems to be too hard for the system to successfully find all the bits with a batch capture.
