Dropping clips into timeline

I've been editing with FCP for over a year and have pretty much figured it out, except for one thing - I edit by building a sequence of interview clips on V1, then drop my B roll on V2 and fade in and out. I dont want to use the tools in the canvas window such as
insert or overwrite since they will put the clip on V1.

When I drop a clip on V2, it splits the clip on V1 so as to insert it. I have to drop the clip in the very top track to avoid this. Of course, each time I do this, the top track moves up one notch because a new video track is opened. Obvioously I'm doing something wrong- but what? I just want to drop my clips on V2 without affecting the other tracks. Thanks for any help and excuse the ignorance.

Check TARGET TRACKS in the manual. There's an F key for it.

Also -- if you drag it directly from the viewer look for the arrow over the clip as you drag it onto the timeline. One will be an arrow down and the other will be an arrow across. All depends on where you have your mouse in relation to the little line in the middle of the clip (rubber band line if you have them on).

Check it out.
