dropping 1080/24p onto a 720/60p timeline?

I'm shooting with a GH1. I saw where some folks said you could drop the 60p straight onto a 24p timeline with fairly good results, and I also saw Jack Daniel Stanley's tutorial on effective ways to do this even smoother-looking... but I'm not satisfied.

I think I may be satisfied with the reverse, though. Most of my footage will be 720/60p anyhow, but when I try to drop a 1080/24p clip onto a 720/60p timeline, it won't even play, though I swear I've seen it's easily doable. Any ideas?

Thanks!

AVCHD originally, converted to ProRes (HQ in most cases). I'm just trying to achieve HD footage (720 or 1080) that's not jittery from either up or downscaling. Thanks for responding!

ProRes HQ is overkill for AVCHD, and will bog your system down pretty badly. Use ProRes LT, it'll support AVCHD fully, no loss in quality at all. Much better performance. Dropping 1080 on a 720 Sequence shouldn't be any problem at all, with one caveat. You're going from 24p to 60p, which means FCP has to create fake frames, and it could look jittery. Make the Sequence 720p24. But moving from 24p footage to 60p is going to be less than perfect. Perhaps use Compressor (you'll have to set up the Frame Controls pane properly) to convert the frame rate first. It'll do a better job (using Optical Flow) than what FCP does on the fly (Frame Blending).
