Dropped my DVX! And it's broken . . .

'Tis a sad day, my friends.

The camera slipped from my hand, and fell approximately 18 inches onto a hardwood floor. It landed on its lens hood, snapping off the lens hood, the plastic tip of the camera that protects the lens (whatever this piece is called), and the focus ring. :crybaby:

In the above photo, the actual piece that's broken is still attached to the camera. The plastic lens protective thingy (upper right) is attached to the DVX via 3 tiny screws. The plastic around these screws has broken, ripped loose from the ring that's still connected to the DVX...surrounding the lens in the above photo.

Below is the broken ring and its mounting screws, now detached from the camera. Can anyone identify this plastic piece? I looked for a part number but had no luck. I think that with a replacement piece, I may be able to repair the camera myself. I'd like to fix it ASAP for an upcoming shoot!

Didn't Barry_S face this same situation and was able to repair it? Try sending him a PM, I sort of remember something like this from a year or two ago...

Thanks for sharing in my misery, everyone... These are the times which try men's souls. :crybaby:

The good news is that the electronics appear to be okay. The camera turns on, zooms, and appears to function normally--although it's a sad sight.

Barry, thanks for the tip. I will PM Barry S immediately!

Stay tuned...

Argh, that's just too damn bad. I'm really afraid something like this is going to happen with my non-warranty-non-insurance dvx. :(

i bet THIS dvx made a clunk sound!

i think as long as the electronics are OK you're good - just find the plastic...maybe PM Jan on here?? she's a Panasonic rep i think

LOL that's not funny but I can't stop laughing

When I forget to tighten down the screw on my tripod, my DVX periodically flings itself forward with a thud. I am expecting to find it hitting the floor someday. You would think I would learn my lesson but it seems to be one I find hard to learn! Sorry for your misfortune. Good luck on fixing it.

That's like watching someone get kicked in the junk. It hurts to watch. I hope it works out man, it looks like it COULD be repaired with some superglue and sandpaper. Don't give up hope

i'm really sorry man, that's the worst
but, the exact same thing happened to my friend's camera. (the same damage i mean)..
his wasn't dropped, but rather cartwheeled by a friend trying to be funny while he was filming haha

I think we can fix your camera. You trashed your focus assembly, so you need to order a new one--part # VXP2212 ($55.02 + shipping/handling) from the Parts Division (800-833-9626). Panasonic will ship within 24 hours and then you can give me a call and I'll walk you through the repair. I've repaired my own DVX and I've also walked another DVXuser through the process without any problems. I'll PM you my cell #.

BTW, I've since come to better appreciate the design of the DVX because in the event of a face plant, the energy is mostly absorbed by the (relatively cheap) servo focus assembly without transmitting it to the lens which would be beaucoup bucks to replace.

Wow, Barry_S to the rescue. Anyone want to put a cape on him and do your HeroFest Movie?
