Im editing a 2 minute short and I keep getting dropped frames during playback. Im editing on a G5 in good condition and I don't think it's my computor working too hard.

The pop up window tells me to change the unlimited rt and I did. I'm still getting them. Anyone have any suggestions?

Regards,

Ryan

"You can turn off in user preferences."

But that doesn't solve the issue.

What format are you working with? Where is your media stored? How much RAM do you have? Everything ozduc asked.

the format of the footage is 24p advanced NTSC. The media is stored on my towers only hard drive. The g5 is a dual processor with 1gb of ram.

Should I edit from an external drive? Thanks guys.

Minium 2Gigs RAM for real video editing.

NEVER use media on your system drive. Apple's specs even state that you MUST put your project and media files on a secondary drive. Put a huge ass second drive internal in your tower. That'll give you the best performance. I put a 500 SATA secondary drive in my Quad Core.

Problem is, FCP and OS X both eat up most of the bandwidth in the data pipe from the system drive. Adding the video streams for editing overloads that data pipe. Thus, a secondary "media drive" allows the video streams to have a clear data pipe to run through.

Either a secondary internal (best performance, lowest cost) or external Firewire drive will do you just fine.

Thanks for the help guys, it's been driving me nuts.

What's the best way about putting another internal drive in my tower? A mac store? Price per Gig? Thanks!

Yeah, buy the biggest drive you can afford, pull the side off that puppy, and pop it in. It's really that simple. Exactly what model of G5 do you have?
