Dropped frames

I was capturing some tapes to a Maxtor 300G (firewire) external drive and it was dropping frames left and right -- I was able to capture the same tape with no problems to my internal drive.

I have another Maxtor (exact same drive), and I've captured to it before with no problems. WTF?

I've seen the same behavior, but I don't think it's brand-specific.

I've never had any luck capturing to an external HD - always drops.
On your "exact same drive", was it external as well or did you mean same drive make but using it as internal?
