Dropped Frames- 24p

Basic question- think I know but am curious to hear what anyone thinks. Im capturing 24p video on Vegas 4.0 with my HP using a Sony mini-dv deck. I have defragmented, cleaned up viruses and spyware, have turned off any virus/spyware protection programs and disconnected the internet during editing, have plenty of memory on the hard drive, but I continue to experience a random dropping of 6 frames at various times. My computer is an HP pavillion, an old work horse which I have been patching together to keep up- added 170 GB hard drive and boosted my RAM to 512mb along with a new video card. I am wondering if I need to increase the RAM more? (I know a new computer is the obvious answer, but Im trying to use the old computer for this one last 30 minute video) Experts- please help! Thanks-
Mike

Re: Dropped Frames- 24p

I'm wondering if your tape might be stretched or worn -- especially if you've tried to recapture from it multiple times.

What's your processor speed?

Re: Dropped Frames- 24p

Hi David-
Mike here- the processor is 1.5 ghz. The tape is new Panasonic 63ME- the best I could find locally. It has only been played back once before- if at all, through my DVX100.
The DVX100 is now having playback problems- but that is another story- the recording function works fine though- so I rented this Sony Mini-DV deck.
Thanks-
Mike

Re: Dropped Frames- 24p

What are your capture settings in vegas. You should not be capturing your footage as 24p, it should be set to Dv NTSC 29.97fps. Vegas converts your footage on the fly when editing. If that doesn't seem to work, download the trial version of Scenalyzer http://www.scenalyzer.com and see if that will capture for you.

Re: Dropped Frames- 24p

I have found that most of my dropped frames when working with 24p or 60i have to do with background processes interrupting
the capture stream.  I usually reboot and then use "End it All".  Then I can get a clean capture.  any other glitches are usually tape based.  I havn't had any of those yet.

Re: Dropped Frames- 24p

Another idea is to make sure your deck is running on mains power and not from the battery. Turn off the audio and video previews in Vegas and monitor on the deck's LCD. If the frame drop is random you can always recapture until you get a clean capture. It's a pain to do it this way and only good for short clips.

Re: Dropped Frames- 24p

Thanks everyone- Donp is correct- I found that I had some spyware protection 'shields' on from a program called 'webroot'. I turned off the shields and it worked fine.
