Drobo

Don't bother with the Drobo. It's a cool concept, but speeds are inconsistent at best. Better to get a true RAID setup with hot-swappable drives. Check out Firmtek's stuff and the RAID systems at www.macsales.com

Drobo... equals Slowbo.

It's a great idea for home users (my mother for instance) and people that are just backing up data. But for video editing... you need something faster. I always recommend the fine people over at CalDigit. For backing up... I really like the new XDCam drive reader/writer from Sony. Better than using discs... gives you that tape feel!

I'm still saying CalDigit or G-Tech bro! I know they're more expensive... but you pay for the support and quality build. Dunno anythign about the one you linked to.

The 3Ware Sidecar got really good reviews in DV magazine, and I just ordered one. It's a dead-end system in terms of size, unlike the CalDigit Raids, which you can daisy chain (I believe). But the CalDigits cost thousands more. It's a true hardware RAID set-up, and if you can live with the size (which most people should be able to), it seems like a great deal.

I built my own SATA RAID with eight drives. I used the HighPoint Rocket RAID card. 4TB and I get 450 mbps sustained with a half full RAID. It kicks and only cost me about $2,000.00 a few years ago. It's old tech now but it has been bulletproof. I need to re-stripe it RAID 5 though, I have been flying with it at RAID 0 and have not had a heartbreak moment yet but I will eventually if I don't go for protection.

I agree about the Drobo, great for storage, lousy for editing.
