Drive went offline

There is a message that says HD is offline, when I try to launch FCP HD. I am using an 250 GB external lacie drive. What should I do to get it back? My files are viewable when I directly look at the drive. On a deadline need help!

Couple of things. Try restarting. If that doesn't cut it after a few tries then do the following.

Power down, unplug the Mac's power and all devices and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then plug it all back in and fire it up. This resets some internal bus or something (I'm not a tech-head), this worked for me a couple weeks ago when my two LaCie's seemed lost.

Also, run Repair Permissions a couple of times from the Disc Utility. Helps keep things tidy.

Good luck.

I tryed turning off my computer for a couple of minutes, and I turned off the drive, but maybe I did not wait long enough. I will try the other idea, thanks.

This will happen if your scratch disk is set to a FW drive and you've powered down that drive.

Do you have a dialog box that asks you to reset your scratch disk? If not, try opening a different project and THEN open the one you are working on. Reset the scratch.

Good luck,

Don't just turn it off, but unplug the entire unit from the wall as well as your drive from the computer itself. Wait 15, and plug it all back up.

When ever Final Cut gives you problems always trash the preferences. This can be done manually or with a great free program. I think I posted this before.

The program can be found here:
http://fcprescue.andersholck.com/

If you choose the manual way there are 4 files to delete, don't worry these files are regenerated when you reopen the program:
-Users/(your login directory)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
-Users/(your login directory)/Library/Preferences/Final Cut Pro User Data/Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs
-Users/(your login directory)/Library/Preferences/Final Cut Pro User Data/Final Cut Pro Obj Cache
-Users/(your login directory)/Library/Preferences/Final Cut Pro User Data/Final Cut Pro Prof Cache

Here is what I do when I run into flakey problems or issues.

-Quit FCP

-Trash Preferences

-Reboot into safe boot, this is accomplished by holding down the shift key while rebooting until you see the words "Safe Boot", if you have never done this or you often shut down your computer at night this could take upto 10 minutes, but keep holding the shift key until you see the words.

-Once in safe boot goto:
Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
and run "Repair Disk Permissions"

-Once disk permissions are complete reboot your mac and everything should be good. If you still have problems then I would also reset the PRAM and NVRAM, but that isn't your problem, but if you care to know how, you can check out here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238

Alot of what I listed is general computer maintance, honestly I would boot to a safe boot once a week, it is a good routine to get into. Most of the time trashing preferences fixes many FCP quirks that just appear.

Hope this helps, wow did I just type all of that....

The hard drive IS formatted for mac, right?

Switching from PC to mac with external hd's usually doesn't work unless it has been partitioned.
