DR-100 playback weirdness

I recently took my newly purchased DR-100 out for its maiden voyage and I have a perplexing issue. Listening through the headphones (Sony 7506s), the audio sounds very weird: it sounds slightly slow and has a strong echo. I changed the batteries thinking maybe it was a power problem, but it persisted. When I played the files back, same thing: slow and echo-ey. When I imported them into FCP, however, they sounded fine and I was able edit them in no problem. I've gone through the menus to see if there's something I could have set wrong, but didn't find anything. Then again, I'm new to these particular machines.

That is wierd but it's the second time I've heard someone report this. I have been operating a DR-100 for about 9 months and have not experienced this at all.

Since playback in FCP is fine then we know the recording is o.k.

It sounds like you may have the input settings/monitor set to ON. When this is set to ON, the unit is always sending the mic inputs to the headphone jack, even when playing back a recording. You may be hearing both your recording, and the live mics.

I set this setting to OFF, and then put the recorder into record/stby to monitor what the mic(s) are doing to set levels. When the STOP button is pressed, you don't hear the mics.

Check this setting and see if that helps.

That occurred to me, so I tried it both with the monitor on and the monitor off. Same thing. Any time sound is coming out the headphone jack, it's messed up.

Wow, and like I said, you're the second person who has mentioned this symptom. I am not experiencing this with my DR-100. And I've used it the way it came from the factory, as well as after flashing it to support 96k.

Is the speaker turned on?

Problem solved. The unit has a variable speed function ("PB Control" button top right) which I had inadvertently activated. Solution is to go into the playback menu and set it at "0" so that if I accidentally press that button again -- which I can now attest is very easy to do -- it won't actually change the speed.

Good tip. Thanks for sharing!
