DPA 4017 is here

I got to see and "test" a DPA 4017 short shotgun yesterday. I would say Sanken CS-3e has a real competitor here, the pickup pattern was well defined and no change in tone off-axis. And the stick is light, 71 grams (CS-3e 120g)! Looking at the polar pattern graphs it seems they are very similar to Sanken's if my memory serves.

Apparently the price will be about the same as Sanken.

650 usd more
my partner bought one so he will get in 2 weeks or so and i would test if it worth it.

Hi Oleg:

Here in the States, the CS-3e goes for U.S. $1,350.00 so you are saying this new mic is $2,000.00 total?

When you can buy the Schoeps CMC641 for U.S. $1,600.00 and the new Schoeps CMIT5u for U.S. $1,850.00, who would pay more for almost any mic?

DPA is good stuff but not as good as Schoeps I'd bet.

Opinions?

Dan

i say that in Israel this mic with taxes comes to 2000USD
i guess in the states it would be around schoeps
the schoeps really doesnt wort it , sorry it doesnt sounds better then any other shotgun in it range and sorry dont come close to sanken on the street work
for interior you have much cheaper options then 641 that with swivel and cut 1 becomes 2400usd
for that money you can get at least 4 excellent mics as akg /geffel or even more from mbho
these who love logos can waist their money - as my partner - its his money and he is collecting mics so it doesnt counts :-)

Oleg:

So you aren't impressed with Schoeps? You are one of the only knowledgable sound people I have ever met who doesn't love the Schoeps. I just use my ears. I recently tested the CMC641 and CMIT5u side by side with the CS-3e and to my ear, both of the Schoeps had a more natural, uncolored sound than the Sanken, although the Sanken did sound very good. I did test off axis response as well and while the Sanken was good, the CMIT5u was as good at the off axis rejection and had a less colored sound than the CS-3e, to my ear. Of course, the CMC641, being a supercardioid, did not have as good of off axis rejection.

The article and samples will be posted by the end of this month, I'll send you the link and you can take a listen and make up your mind based upon what I heard. I did not test the AKGs, they refused to participate, the only major manufacturer who did, very strange. I did not want to test the AKGs using rentals or people's private mics, I specifically wanted to obtain the mics straight from the manufacturers so nobody could claim that he mics had been abused or were modified.

I have no idea where to even get my hands on a geffel or mbho here in the states so I was not able to test those. But I did test both Sankens, two Schoeps, three Sennheisers, the Oktava, Beyer, two Audio-Technicas and I am getting the Neumann as soon as AES ends. So I think the article at least compares a good cross section of the mics in practical conditions.

Best,

Dan

Dan when you testing the sanken , let the car pass near by then it would show what it worth .
sorry iam in film business where there is one rule - it pass or not - with cs-3 it pass with with cmt is garbage
less coloration of axis more chlorate dont really count in real life .
i did a test for one of my friends when let him hear 6 different shot guns on axis he couldn't really say what is better , he just mentioned one mike that sounded less pleasant - the rode :-)
the others where , 60,70 , 81,cmit , sanken and 82
i ones did a pilot that was shot inside the bar with air condition and all the refrigerators that where working ( we left everything on as we didn't want to make the crew suffer as they came for free and since i wasn't only the mixer but also the producer :-)) , not only the bar but the road on the front window and the door where open for lighting ( day for night)
the only microphone that was giving me usable sound was cs-3 , even the 816 couldn't reed off the passing cars
so there are tests and there is areal life and in real life the schoeps logo doesnt worth the money .
if you sow the fastest Indian so it was recorded with akgs - sounds terrific
if you was working in Europe you could find allot more sennheisers and neumans/
there is very little number of people who can hear different mics side by side in real life situation , usually because they cant afford it .so most buy what everyone have or what been pushed hard from the dealers . that why the schoeps has so big name , it is big for music recording but doesnt give allot for dialog .
the only one thing what really good in schoep is the flexibility but in real life i pull the cables and disconnect the capsules maybe twice the year , does it wort the extra grand per mic - not really .
eventually every mic sounds different , i have neumans 140 that sound different - so what - they sound good, that what counts for the dialog and if we are talking features eventually everything comes to the dialog editor hands who can even match lavalieres to neuman in the same shot . logos are nothing.
try the akg and gefell - you will find that they sounds not worst then the 41 for any blabla

by the way Dan i have 4 schoepses as well -:-)
i bought them years ago when recorded classical music they still n-1 for that
and i also have chiniz mics that i nailed 20 commercials with for prime time only for fun to prove that logo doesnt matter
what really matter is the acoustic and your booman and when it doesnt help we just pull the cs-3 :-)

Perhaps for time saving sake Oleg, have you posted your favorite mics and general situation(s) you found them to be best for those of us without the finances or proximity (to a stocking dealer) to be able to test them all out for ourselves?

For example:

Schoeps 641 - Classical Piano
Schoeps mk4 - indoor...
CS3e - Drive-by car shootings (oh sorry that's just in the US) and outdoor dialog
AKGxxx - indoor dialog

Thanks in advance!

41 for piano - are you nuts :-)i dont have favorite mics except 1 - guess which

an for indoor i have enough to choose - its depends what i feel that day -
but usually i stay with the gefel these days , as it work best for female voices i have on the current serial , schoepses for the cur on the visors
or for low ceilings as the gefel doesnt have knee
dont really care what to record with - maybe after i will have enough from these i will return to the schoeps - who knows - it really doesnt bother me what iam working with as long i have normal booman
