DP Show Reel Fall 2010

I would recommend more lit scenes as opposed to just available light. Of course this might depend on if you are trying to appeal to clients or production companies.

Also I personally prefer to see the scenes in its original form as opposed to seeing it cut to music for DP reel so I can understand the context of why you did what you did.

Just my 2c.

Awesome, that was fantastic all around! Great edit. Besides the great cinematography portrayed throughout the whole video, it made me really want to watch every film. Especially the army one. If i was a client or production company i would hire you in a second! Great work!

Intro is waaay too long for me. I realize you're cutting to the music, but you shouldn't be a slave to that. I didn't see a shot that said anything about you as a DP until 01:17. I feel anxious when my reel extends beyond 2 min.

I see some very nice shots in there. Try cutting only your best stuff that sells you as a DP rather than struggling to fill the gaps to complete a music montage.

I agree, as most people say in reels the best stuff should come first but in fact in this reel you have home video type of things in the first minute that mostly can be shot by anyone and only after the 1;17 mark as dcarstens said does the extraordinary footage start coming in. i guess it depends if you're confident that a client would view the entire thing but many people i assume would just get bored by the minute mark and turn it off.
but the footage in the 2nd half obviously is breathtaking and one of the best on this site

I enjoyed your reel. Whilst I agree to some degree with what the above users said - I still think there are shots before 1:17 that are excellent. In particular the ones with the woman on the beach, I liked those shots.

Strongly disagree. I don't believe that suddenly using a shallow DOF etc makes the shots any better or less "home movie". There were shots before the 1:17 mark that looked great. (By the way I'm nto suggesting any of this looks like a home video - it does not) Who cares if they're mostly naturalistic? As long as there's a good combination of shots that show your various skills. The shots chosen in a reel and the way they are put together with the music, sound, flow...whatever have you, I think also says a lot about a DP. As much as any "lighting" shot would say, if not more. In this case the original poster would be someone I would very much like to work with.

From a "what should I do for my DP reel" point of view, I did agree that perhaps the intro is too long though. It's sad that you have to take into account people who won't sit and watch a 3 minute reel. I am under the impression that anyone worth your time would sit and watch it through several times before making an impression -- unless of course the reel was just awful-- which this one is obviously not. Personally I was hooked all the way through and wouldn't change any of it, unless you could find a way to keep the way you've synced the images to the music.

I think the music track is very good too. It keeps building which definitely helps.

Just my opinion, of course. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed your reel very much.

I recently booked a feature film DP gig in New Orleans based on the woman on the beach and the Sunset shot with the bird flying across, so I think I'll keep those shots in... thanks for the feedback though
