DP quick Q's.

One of the recent graduates of the college I go to (ironically, a $43,000 a year school) does freelance DP work in NYC. He has a good reel, I think, graduated in film studies, and is really smart.

He says $80 a day is good for a 12 hour day for indie work.

My other friend crewed for a $500,000 movie and got $4 an hour.

I don't know where you guys find these jobs.

The first guy may be right - meaning that most indie work doesn't have any money behind it.

Your other friend got screwed, quite honestly.
But, if he's willing to work for it and get experience - build up his reel - etc etc....
then I guess there's no problem.

But I agree, they will both probably change their tunes within the next year or two.
I used to do work for next to nothing - everyone probably has.
But $4 an hour is ridiculous.

Luis what did you USED to charge [when starting out] and [if posible] what do you typically charge now... of course I guess it all depends on budget and type of project.

Wait. Are you a DP or a director or a producer or all?

any reels?

I'm primarily an editor.
I do a lot of shooting - but it's mainly on projects where I'm taking it all the way through post (commercials, corporate, etc).

So the bulk of my work is still post work, not shooting.
I wouldn't try to get work as a DP - there are guys out there dedicated to learning only that craft, and honestly I can't hold a candle to them.

By the way, if you're looking for an editor/colorist/sound designer in New York - I've got some really good friends up there who you can't go wrong with.
Drop me a PM is you're looking for any post work, and I'll get you in touch.

(unless of course you don't mind sending footage down to Austin)

As far as what I used to charge - honestly it was whatever I could get.
When starting out I was just hungry for work and experience.

I seeeeee.

nice.

Yeah, I will keep that in mind.

For the current project everything is pretty much done and I'm now trying to get the DVD ready for self distribution. Though I would like to color correct (pretty!) and make the sound GREAT! for the actual DVD master, I cant - 'cause this current project was made basically WITH-OUT money and I dont think I can afford your friends. So basically I'm doing everything myself (I also wrote and directed it) for now until we get funding for the next.

This is the website for the current project btw; www.LaCortinaDelPalacio.com

Thnks Luis, it's allways a pleasure to talk to you and everyone here.
