Downloads with a .part extension?

I am using a Mac with OS 10.8.6 and Firefox v. 20.0 and everything I download is comes up with a .part extension. This extension is not tied to any app that lets me open them. I am having to remove the .part extension to open the files. What is this and and how to I get rid of it?

Sounds like it's not finishing the download procedure and is leaving the completed download as the temporary name that it gives it. Not sure what would be causing that unless it's a bug in Firefox.

Have you tried rebooting?

Yeah, I have re-booted. It started when I upgraded to the latest version of Firefox... of course. I am mostly downloading documents, and they are complete once I pull the .part extension. It is weird.

I have to say that I love me some Firefox, but these latest updates have been causing issues. Mostly on the Windows platform for me though (I was having an issue where it would crash Premiere/AE if I had Firefox up at the same time...they'd be as stable as a rock if I left it closed...but that seems to have cleared up now).

Are the files 'fully downloaded' and only the temporary .part extension is the problem?

To me it sounds like a bug in Firefox. I don't use Firefox typically, but another 'mozilla' based browser, and occasionally the 'new' version does wyrd things... and I have had to roll back. Don't know how hard that is for Firefox...

Well, from what I could find on the net, that extension is for "Partially downloaded files" and is used across platforms. Like I noted, the files I have downloaded, which have mostly been PDFs, appear to be complete. I have just removed the .part and replaced it with .pdf and the files open fine. I don't get it with downloaded jpegs. It does look like a bug with Firefox. I will just keep checking for a fix in an upcoming upgrade, hopefully.
