Downloading Tape onto Vegas Pro?

I shot a short film on the DVX100A using the min DV tape a few years back but no longer have the DVX100A. I do have the HVX200A which I use the P2 card for recording on. In the past all I would have to do is hook the HVX200A up to the computer and download the footage onto my desktop and from there use Vegas 9 or 11 with Raylight to pull the footage onto my time line.

I need to edit the film I shot on the min DV tape but haven't been able to figure out how to download it onto the computer using the HVX200A as the player. I have Vegas Pro 9, 11 and 12. On the old Mac I can use imovie which opens the footage up easily but I would rather use Vegas for my editing tool.

Any feedback or thoughts would be GREAT - Thanks

You don't need Raylight if it's on tape. You use the 200A exactly like you used the 100A. Just make sure you have the switch on the back set to "Tape."

What problem are you having?

I'm having an issue on how to move the footage from the DV tape onto the computer or on the Vegas timeline? When I had the 100A I only had the Mac using Imovie but haven't tried using it on a Windows before. I'm wondering if I need to set Vegas up somehow to capture the footage from the HVX or is there something I might be doing wrong on the HVX? With the P2 Card I just push the button on the back of the camera and it would transfer to the desktop. Being a tape I'm sure there must be a different way of doing this?

I assume you've got the cam connected to the PC via a firewire cable. If not, you'll need to do that first, of course. ALWAYS connect the cable to the PC FIRST -- then to the camera, in order to avoid accidentally blowing your firewire connector on the cam. (If your cable is 4-pin on both ends, then this is not an issue. But if it's 4-pin on one end and 6-pin on the PC end, then always connect to the PC first.)

When you turn the camera on, Windows should recognize it immediately. I'm not familiar with the HVX, but you may recall with the DVX100a, you had to push a button to switch the cam from 'camera' to 'play' mode. You may need to do something similar with the HVX, but then Windows should recognize it.

Then launch Vegas. Click the File > Capture option. It should be fairly self-explanatory from there on.

I check my cable and it works fine. I did a test with using the P2 card and it was ready to download the footage. But it won't do anything with the Tape. When I launch Vegas it only wants to do the web capture - that is the only option I get. When I had the DVX I only used the MAC for editing and all I had to do was open Imovie.

It got to be something with the HVX. I couldn't find anything in the owner manual. I will ask the HVX guys to see who is using this camera with tape and Vegas. Thanks

I just tried it with a small min DV handheld and that didn't work either.

Make sure the HVX is connected by Firewire. Make sure it's switched to Tape. Make sure it's on.

In the Project Media window, click the little video camera icon, third from the left. When the window comes up, choose DV as your capture format. Another application will open. You capture with that application.

The P2 downloads via a USB cable, I believe. You can't capture via USB -- it has to be firewire.

If it didn't work with the small MiniDV cam, then most likely either the firewire cable is bad or the firewire port on the PC is not working.
