double recording

i was wondering if--i have a lav mic and a boom mic and the shot is tight enough to gave a boom, should i use both? i have a sony pd-170 and it has 2 channel inputs. would i be hurting anything if i used both?

Hi Brandon,

You won't hurt anything by having both, but most likely in your post mix you will only use one or the other. Which one depends on many factors, such as echo and reverb, whether you had drop outs if the lav is wireless, etc. I would not try to use a lav to cover more than one person, though. And, don't forget to record room tone/ambient tone, especially if you use the lav's recording.

Also, in my experience, most dialog is recorded mono and then mixed stereo or more in post.

HTH,

Phil

Backing up a lav. with a shotgun is common...and advisable in situations that don't require stereo tracks. Some mixers also sometimes run one of the mono channels 5-10 dbs lower as a protection against peaks and distortion on the primary track.

yup... run both, always good insurance. just in case you get confused: phil means dual mono not stereo (they dont mix lav to one channel, boom to another)... right phil? sorry, not trying to be irritating.. i just misread that and thought whiteside might do the same.

Timapter,

Yep, that is exactly what I meant. I really have to stop writing my posts at 1am. They never come out quite exactly what I mean.

Thanks!

Phil
