I do!
Maybe it's because I juice.
Juicing used to be a bigger thing 5 or so years ago, but it's still one of the best whack 'em smack 'em dietary "supplements" out there.
I do all the chopping and my girl does the actual juicing and clean up. We make enough for the whole week on Sundays, jar the ingredients separately, and put fresh lime juice in each of them for acid to keep them preserved.
Typical ingredients are carrots, celery, apples and parsley. Each serving is about 2 cups. Everything organic.
What's cool is that most stores (organic and the big chains) sell veggies specifically FOR juicing, so unlike 10 years ago, you don't have to break the bank when you're buying all these vegetables that you're not actually going to eat.
The only day I don't have juice (it's also when I have take out food) is Saturday, and I'm tellin ya -- as soon as you start chopping those vegetables and fruits your insides just start dancing because they know what's coming.
Some other health tips for my fellow filmmakers out there --
1) Keep a package of dental flossers (or, "floos picks") on your end table where you watch TV. After you eat dinner and you're just chillaxing, grab one of those little buggers and get to flossing! Remember, the thing about flossing is that it's not about getting things out from between your teeth. When you floss there's an invisible liquid bacteria that will eventually turn into plaque if you just let it sit there (it takes 24 hours for that liquid to begin to harden, so while you can floss as often as you like, as long as you're doing it once every 24 hours you're fine). If you haven't been flossing you'll bleed a couple times because your gums are infected and so the blood is there trying to push the infection out. Once you release the infection you'll be fine.
2) I work out three times a day, but the first one is the most fun. My girl and I get up, put on Buffy (or Angel or Xfiles or whatever series we're re-watching on DVD), and we each do our check list of workouts. Just use an eraseable board, have 6 circles for jumping jacks, 6 for bosu ball step-ups, etc and just do reps of ten. Figure out what excercises you LIKE to do and just do those every morning. Spend the last 10 minutes of your 45 minute show stretching and then start your day!
3) If you're smoking, quit!!! Be a man, only pussies smoke cigarettes. If you hang out with people who smoke, either stop hanging out with them or tell them that they're no longer allowed to smoke when they're around you. You'll find out pretty quick who your friends are. I used to smoke 2 packs a day from 12 and into my 20s. You gotta suck it up, go through two weeks of sleepless withdrawl and then about 4 months of minor cravings here and there and you're done. Use the floss and water bottles to keep the oral fixation at bay.
Most important thing, though, is that you can accomplish anything on your own, but anyone you allow into your personal space who is exhibiting behavior that opposes your own will absolutely cause you to fail. My girl has to drink fresh juice, work out and do lots of other things she would do if she was on her own -- things she wouldn't do if I too wasn't doing them with her.
Support systems are NOT a requirement if you're going at this life alone. You can handle it. But if you have someone living with you, if you let people get that close, if they aren't willing to take on these challenges with you, you will not succeed. You may be able to walk tall for a while, you may be able to give the appearance that you can coexist with additiction and not be an addict yourself, but I promise if the people you love are not with you in actions as well as spirit and you don't cut them off, eventually you'll become what they are and what they want you to be too -- a loser.
So juice! Floss! Quit smoking! And don't be a loser.
AND for all the fattys out there, you morbidly obese fellas? Don't fret, I was one of those too! 390 pounds by the time I was 19. You know the workouts, (read Muscle and Fitness if you don't) but as for dieting just decide on one food that you love and make a low fat creation of it. For me it was spaghetti. Heart Healthy Prego, ground chicken breast and wheat noodles. Eat that every single night, Monday-Thursday. Stuff your face. Eat as much as your binge addiction requires. Friday night give yourself a cheat meal -- Chipotle if you have one. Do the same thing on Saturday, but really go for it -- gross Chinese, Mexican, whatever. Again, binge away. On Saturday and Sunday mornings eat as much toast as you need with one whole egg and 5 egg whites along with breakfast turkey sausage. Sunday nights see about making yourself some homemade pizza using turkey sausage, spinach and wheat dough. Monday-Thursday eat sugarless cereals for every meal other than dinner and eat it for dessert if necessary. Always use skim milk. Don't like it? Too bad. (Unless you're lactose intolerant, then go a different route, but watch the Soy -- estrogen a man don't need).
I know from experience, beating two food addictions simultaneously does not work. You can either attack the binge or you can attack the flavor. For me, attacking flavor was easier. So long as I could stuff myself to the point of suffocating, I didn't mind that I wasn't eating a lot of variety. Once you beat the addiction of flavor, all the while you're working out, you'll start to get a handle of the binge by default -- your body will start to require things differently.
The most important thing for the morbidly obese is, don't weigh yourself and don't join a gym. I remember the first time I ever went for a walk in sweatpants (I was about 15). Some kids drove by and egged me -- I had to walk a mile home along a busy road covered in egg from head to toe. Things like that have incredible emotional impact. And myself, like most fattys, are incredibly empathetic and self aware, which makes going to the gym like a trip to Hades. Once you drop the first hundred pounds or so you can join a gym -- just make sure that it's a place where people sweat and grunt and pretty much exude rage. I like Quads' upper levels for that. Just stay away from the gyms filled with happy people -- they don't need to be working out, they're only at the gym to pick up hooch.
And more than anything, stay off the scale! Your waste size is all that matters. It's all that you need to concern yourself with. I have a bone density of 9.8 (an abnormal high is 8.0) most likely because I was morbidly obese during my growth years. If I went by my current weight, even as a person who is in good shape, I'd be confused and depressed.
Pants size is what matters. 32-38 is perfect range regardless of how big you've ever been.
I've just been noticing threads here about people trying to quit smoking, people having heart attacks because of their diet. I've beaten all of these things (as well as a lot of other things like poverty and mental illness) and I feel I'd be remiss if I didn't give you guys some real answers (not that crap people shovel you when they're trying to sell you a chart or a plan). You're an addict and you have to approach all of your addictions the same way you would approach an addiction to heroine.
And remember this -- when that little voice says to you, "But I won't have as much fun if I'm not smoking at this event or in that moment," or "But I won't be able to enjoy television as much if I'm not eating in front of it," Don't listen. As one of my guys used to say, "That's the devil f*(&in with ya." Your addiction it trying to convince you that you won't be able to have as much fun in life, that you won't be as creative, that you won't have the same personality if you quit them -- and it's ALL TRUE!!!
For about two weeks.
For two weeks you will be a monster -- and that will be what your addiction uses as proof. "See! I told you! Without cigarettes or food you can't get through this! You can't be happy! Come back!"
You will be happy. You will be better. You will be stronger. You were who you are before the addictions. I am the same person I was when I was 6 years old. I just decide on my own bedtime now.
So good luck DVXers! Remember, you're the future! If you let your addictions kill you then all that's left to lead the world are all those brain dead f&^%s at that gym who you hate.
Yeah, chew on that.
