Don't Look Now... (Rita)

I know that a category 5 has some strong winds, but, in comparison, tornadoes pack even stronger winds in a narrower path. The F5 tornado that struck Moore, Oklahoma (south OKC) in 1999 had winds in excess of 300 MPH. In fact, they were the strongest winds ever recorded on the face of the Earth. It is referred to, unofficially, as an F6 - because the Fujita scale ends at F5.

Man I remember that. Stroud is still pretty much a ghost town after that. It took out an entire outlet mall.

There was talk amongst Terry and I about a year ago to do some tornado hunting when they're ripe and in season :)

Yeah, I'd still like to do some more storm chasing. Perhaps, next Spring.

Fred Plowman had contacted me 3 or 4 months ago to see if I could help him with his doc, but I was too busy with my HS football doc.

Scary. Now would be the time to test out my hurricane destruction plan by detonating a tactical nuke in the eye of this bad boy. I guarantee that my plan would either vaporize the hurricane completely OR create a previously unseen Category 8 hurricane that spews radioactive rain and debris over 35% of the country.

Are you gonna to make a movie about that? I bet it'll be best of the best movies ever produced :)

Now that i'd like to see... Why aren't there more radical experiements going on in america?

sorry for double post, but i think Roland Emmerich is already making that doomsday hurricane film.

personally, i think people are overreacting to the hurricane, especially in Austin. people are packing up in the grocery stores buying food and water, putting gas in their cars, etc. if i didn't know any better, i would have thought it was the Chernobyl Hurricane.

They just wanna buy up the neccessities before the Houstonians invade Austin and Dallas.

Interesting. Hadn't heard of that. But I've suspected that Katrina alone could trigger some of the changes they speculate -- perhaps Rita will further it along.

In any case, depending on how bad things are, I don't expect there to be as much of an immediate impact this time around, at least in the Southeast.

Looks like Rita is expected to hit as a Cat 3 hurricane. Still a nasty one, but not as nasty as Katrina. That's a little bit of comfort.

John, i was talking about the inland people overreacting. i'd evacuate the area if i was in houston and galveston, but for people in austin to be driving north is very extreme. austin is nearly 300-400 miles inland. all they have to worry about is tornadoes.

oh, and i knew it wasn't going to be a cat 5 hurricane.

FX Network aired a mockumentary in June 2005 called Oil Storm, about a hurricane destroying New Orleans and parts of Texas in Sept 2005. It even had cameos of New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin. According to several blogsites almost everything in the movie has happened!!
