hey guys. Im in a tough spot right now. Im a high school student looking to start some freelance video. Ive worked at a tv station for arond 1.5-2 years already. I had my mind set on the PD170. but then I started to look at the DVX100a and with its 24P. Im going to be using the camera for short films, capturing events for the TV Studio, and maybe some documentar type interview videos. I heard time and time again that PD170 is way better in low light conditions, but I never heard how the DVX is. Please give me some info and insight into my purchase. Thanks.

I'd suggest you talk to the TV studio and ask them what they preferr. If they're going to pay you then you need to service their needs before yours and the might have an opinion on which to get.

Really, I like both cameras, but I'd go with the DVX (and not for the 24p, but for all the other superior features).

I also work for a tv station, and just recently showed them some of the things I've shot with my DVX and they loved it so much they bought one for the station! We were using a betacam sp camera before, but honestly as J_Barnes was saying, if you use the 24P or not, the other features are amazing! The image we are able to capture is so much more controlable! I've never used the PD170, so I really cant comment on that, but I do know that the brodcasters I work for love the look of the DVX's image.

The PD170 is a little better in low light, but the DVX is excellent in low light as well, and a 20w video light will do far more for your footage than the tiny difference between the two cameras.

The PD170 is a great "video" camera, but the DVX matches it in "video" and adds the "film" look too, as well as better audio, better image control, better manual control, etc. No contest.
