Don't go 35 mm?

Why shoot digital video, convert it to 35 mm film and project it? You can shoot DVX--> convert to MPEG and send it by satellite to the screen...
Or better shoot HDX!

In Europe (Ireland) the first 500 screens showing Digital Cinema is a fact. Making Ireland a pilot to convert cinemas to a digital format from 35mm film.
This will allow cinemas to download new films to a computer server via satellite. Advantages of the new system include the elimination of flickers and scratches, more control and fast distribution.

What are they using for projection, HD?

At the US they are trying to implement a Digital Cinema format over a 4K Image and with 15 channels of audio... Do we need all that?

Yeah, they make a lof of fuss about improved quality etc but the underlying reality is that they're taking movie distribution down the same line as music distribution now lies.

In the old days you could put a record into the top 10 by paying the right people, and report whatever sales you wanted. Now there's an electronic tally kept so the number one record really is the number one record sold...

In our business, the MPAA has been talking about doing that because of the cinemas not being honest about reporting their sales.

Bottom line - with the new delivery system, if the entrance counter doesn't tally up with the revenues from the cinemas - they cut the feed.

Also there's no more using the same prints to run in different cinemas.

But of course these modern measures are being adopted to counter the old time pirates.

Now there's a whole new generation of pirates to deal with...

It already exists in the US. Many screens are already DLP projectors but folks seem to prefer film over the harsh and sharp video projection.

I was reading that the reason that most cinemas haven't switched over is becasue of the cost. They can still pack theatres with their current equipment so why convert if they dont have to. right?

I remember when ticket sales were 3.50 for a matinee here, now I'm looking at shoveling out close to 7 bucks for a cheapie ticket.

And we just reached 9 dollars for a regular ticket, its insane. Then the snacks come in. Movies are too expensive to bring a date to, just take them to a fancy restaurant, better conversation anyway.

Theater owners have a tough enough time staying in business not to have to worry about putting in new systems. THe movie industry is like ht record industry and the movie companies are thieves taking some 80-90% of profits from the first few weeks of a run from theater owners, hence the popcorn..

In fact, all cinema owners just think about selling popcorn...

It's all they can think about outside of trailers which they get paid for only after the day is done. Each night theater owners have to call in the days receipts to get paid by the movie companies for the theater trailers they supply. And of course the slide shows which they only get half of the ad sales on from the company that supplies the ads. Don't blame your theater owner. THose companies are barely in business. Blame the movie companies that rape the movie houses. Theater owners are low man on the pole and hence why you get raped for the soda and candy. If not you wouldn't have a theater to go to. So talk about costs? Lets se, a theater company has to lease or buy a building, pay utilities, equipment and maintenance, pay for the films they show, and the people that work in the theater. You pay once, all they do is pay. And what do they make? Until about the third week of a movie run they make about 20 to 40% of the ticket price (first week they make 20% usually). And they make a bit per person (impression) for the trailers you watch. And of course the concession. But even then many theaters hire outside concessionaires because they usually upfront $25-50k for building the theater in the first place for the right to sell, and then a theater splits the profits with them. Trust me, you don't want to own a theater.
