Dont Do It

J.R. Hudson

More and more I'm seeing people post a thread that is a link to a contest they entered and they are asking for VOTES.

Well guess what? Don't post links to contests and ask for us to PAD YOUR STATS with VOTES

Thats a cheap way to win something by screwing other honest filmmakers. Be a man and let your work speak for itself

I've already deleted 2 different threads from the same user even after asking for him not to do it.

Hmmm... I actually have mixed feelings about this.

Posting links to contests and asking people to vote for your work (specificaly rate it high) just to support fellow forum member is one thing. One that should not allowed.

However, what if it's just a thread stating that your film has been accepted into some online fest and that people can view it at <...> and vote if they care at <...>? Since most fests rules do not allow for the short to be screened anywhere else while the competition is still on, that would seem like a legitimate request and the only way to let other DVXusers see your work.

You know what? I agree; if someone is mellow enough to say 'Vote for whomever' as a disclaimer I can dig that. In fact, I have seen it donE this way.

What we dont want to see is VOTE FOR ME and then a string of users chime in I VOTED! I VOTED FOR YOU!

Meanwhile, Phil in Alaska is getting screwed.

It's a sore subject and has tainted even the DVX contests in the past (people stacking the votes)

So yes; posting a contest where your film is at is one thing; asking people for their votes is another. You're not running for office and you're screwing someone else.

Ha ha! A funny conversation. The place where I work had a multi-month campaign asking its employees to vote for <....> and to ask their friends and families to do the same. Guess what? <....> won.

So much for corporate ethics guidelines. Anybody hiring?

The above was meant to say: Hudson, you're da man. I agree with you 100%

(more sucking up to the mods, I guess  )

What's worse is when you go to the vote page and the short is not very good. Not pointing any fingers or saying that this has happened recently, but like mentioned above, people should say "Head over to this site, check out the short, if ya like it, vote for me." Not "We need a new cam, vote for me!!!"

Yeah John, good call. I have avoided those posts. What is right is right. If you are in a contest where internet votes are the final word, then I think that the contest is a little suspect to begin with. If you enter a popularity contest, make sure you are popular.

When people post that ****, I make it a point NOT to watch their flick. I just don't care enough about popularity contests, to be honest. I got sick of that **** in high school.

I'm with John on this. We're all pretty supportive of each other around here, but if a competition is based on merit, then don't beg for votes. Give us a link and let us decide. I have very strong feelings about people not getting friends and family to vote in DVXfest, so it would be hypocritical for us to facilitate it elsewhere.

I agree although only a moron would vote for a bad film just because of where the filmmaker posts his rants.

On another note, whats with all the polls over the last couple of months. Best Movie, Best all time, Best effect,Best non effect, favorite underwear, blah blah blah.(Excuse the artistic license) Its getting a little over the top in my estimation. How about requiring mod approval before polling the membership? Sorry to hijack your thread John. I just wanted to jam a couple of rants in. I wish the board would return to more threads on the dvx, more grabs and more footage(especially from disjecta). The zombiefest was fantastic more of that less polls please.

I love this place but its changing and I'm too old and too stubborn to appreciate the changes. Forgive me my longing for the old dvxuser forum. Like the Marlboro commercials it has faded away. I am more of a lurker than a poster and the tidbits of information I have gathered have been both interesting and informative. Those insights are still present I just have to do more reading now to find them. I just wish when people posted they had something to say?

I should add here that I was a regular visitor to this site for two years prior to joining.

I remember a couple of weeks ago (maybe--working at home screws your time continuam big time) a guy who asked people to vote on his music video and were then pissed when people did and his score got lowered. He threw a hissy fit about racism and people not liking rap...never once thinking it just wasn't a good video! These are the kinds of idiot posts that should be swept away with the trash. Good call, John. Now go rent Land of the Dead uncut, damn it.

Suffice it to say, your opinion is not alone, and has been forwarded to senior management!

What about the guy who asked us to vote for his girlfriend in the Apple Dumpling contest? That's also cheating. But, then again, it's a good excuse to look at hot chicks. :)

PK

That was the exact POST that made me personally aware of how uncool it was; even though the chick in question was the hottest one. (Irony)
