donations/tax deductions

I'm wondering if someone's generous donation to an "artistic video project" could be written off as tax-deductible by the donor. Anyone have experience with donations and writeoffs?

If the group they gave the money to is an IRS-certified nonprofit organization, then it's possible that it's tax-deductible. If they gave it to an individual, then no, not a chance.

Ironic isn't it? Artsy donations can't get a tax writeoff, but a bad business investment can. DOn't forget to vote.

Artsy donations can be a tax deduction, but as Barry pointed out, they donation has to be made to a company that is a charity under the IRS terms. However, for independent artists who don't have the time, money or desire to form a non-profit company there is always fiscal sponsorship.

Fiscal sponsorship is where a non-profit actually lets an artists raise funds through their organization. Once an organization agrees to be your sponsor, you still have all the responsibility to do the fundraising, but all of the funds go to the non-profit company. They deduct an administrative fee (usually 5-15%) and then give you the rest for your project.

Non-profits are often very careful about who they sponsor because the projects they sponsor are a representation of the company, and if you get a sponsor you will be required to report to them on your progress often.

thanks for the info, rob. some excellent points for someone not knowin a damn thing about business/donations/boring-but-essential fundraising techniques.

after some quick reasearchin;
Has anyone here had any experience with IFP's Fiscal Sponsorship Program? It seems relatively straight-forward and attractive with the mentoring/workshopping bonuses they offer. I'm serious about my project and it almost seems too good to be true that they could seriously help me out, if i were to be accepted of course.

There are several orgs that provide fiscal sponsorship specifically to filmmakers, including IFP, Film Arts, Bay Area Video Coalition, Globalvision, Downtown Community TV Center, and the Short Film Foundation. Most of these organizations require you to become a member in order to apply, which usually means an annual membership fee from $25 - $100.

I personally have never used any of these orgs, but only because paying for a membership that I can't use has never seemed worth it to me. Instead, I look to the material I am shooting a pick a non-profit that would be sympathetic toward the material.

For instance, my current project is a family comedy short that features a little girl. I'm reaching out to non-profits who are focus on family and child issues to sponsor the project.

I donated a production to United Way one year. Valued it at $10K. Made for a nice deduction. Won a Telly in the process!

rob- thanks again for the names dropped, i'll check them out. also, our project comments on effects of tv, media, etc and i think with those broad issues something can be conjured regarding a specific org.
