Domain Names and Web Hosting

I'm pretty new to buying domains names and web space and I was wondering what are some of the best places to purchase these things? Any help you can offer would be grately appreciated,

Thanks

How does it work if you have your own server? I have a buddy willing to set up my spare PC as a server, and I have the software to set up my own site. DO you still register through one of these places?

You still have to register the domain name, but then you don't have to worry about paying anyone for hosting. I had a friend who hosted my site for awhile.

BAD Taylor! Naughty, naughty. Only send someone to NS if you really don't like them.

Me, I use PairNIC. Not the cheapest. But I've been with them (and hosted by pair) since '99 with zero problems.

So, if I have my own server, do I register at one of these sites, or somewhere else? Do you buy the domain name, or do you pay someone annually for it?

You "buy" the domain name for a period of time.

Then you associate that name with an IP address (fixed, if someone is hosting for you, or dynamic if you go thru that sort of service...usually if you'll be offering things from home and have a changeable numeric address) with someone.

So for the domain name you have renew it after a period ? Also what does it mean when a web host says 20gb/ Month transfer ?

Yeah, what GenJerDan said. You usually buy domain names in yearly periods; after which if you don't renew, it goes back into the free market.

I wouldn't recommend hosting a server in your home though; real hosting companies have high-performance, dedicated servers in data centers with tier 1 bandwidth, huge connections (100mbps, oc3, etc.), and usually 99.9% uptime. If you host your site with a legitimate company it would be much faster and be online more so than if you hosted on a home PC with a cable or DSL connection.

My $.02

SilverWolf--Monthly transfer means bandwidth. Basically with 20gb monthly transfer you and/or your site visitors can upload and download up to 20gb (20,000mb) worth of information each month, after which it gets reset for the next month.

SO then I can buy it through godaddy, or whoever and then host it myself? Or if I am hosting it myself do i buy it somewhere else?

Sorry if I seem obtuse, but I want to make sure I understand.

Yeah, you buy it through godaddy or any other registrar and then you can host it wherever, provided you can get the IP or nameservers for that location.

I use godaddy for buying domains and for hosting and I've been pretty happy with them. I think I paid $8 per domain (for a year) and I pay $4 per month for hosting.

Yes, you can buy your domain throught godaddy and then host the site yourself.

Cheers,

Josh

i use 1and1.com. i'm pretty happy with them. pretty cheap as well...

I'll second that. For 10 bucks a month you get 20GB space, 1 terrabyte per month transfer, 3 free domains, thousands of email addresses, etc. etc. etc...
