Dolly?

Renting Matthews doorway dolly for a lot of work we do neumatic tires only.
Clients like those dolly shots.
The Matthews product also works as a gear cart too.
I'd like to own it, but at $2600.00 US it's pricey.
Anybody have any suggestions on a less expensive alternative?
I have been thinking of having a fabricator build a knock off.
Anyone succeeded in doing this?
If so would like to hear from you.

Yes, the Matthews dolly is pretty pricey. Of course, if you keep renting it out, it will pay for itself fairly quickly. However, I got a better solution for you... buy either a Modern Studio or Norms Studio Equipment dolly. I ended up paying $1050 for my modern studio dolly, plus shipping, after getting a 25% discount because I paid when I ordered. Heck for the list price of the matthews dolly I got the dolly, skater wheels, and 3 pieces of 6' track. I really like my MS dolly. It's not quite as nice as the matthews, but really no complaints from me or my clients.

But Matthew, with your name, how could you NOT buy the Matthews dolly? It is your heritage young man! ;-)

Yeah, that's the Norm's dolly I mentioned. However, I would still pick the modern dolly over the norms for two reasons. First, it would be about $150 cheaper--even with the 25% discount I talked about with norms. And two, the modern comes with a push bar on each side. The norms looks like it only comes with a push bar on one side. Basically, what Cinemagadgets is doing for both modern studio and norms gear, is they are buying the gear with the 25% discount and then selling it at list price. Personally, I don't want to pay 25% more just so I don't have to call a company to order a product.

And if Matthews was cheap like I am, I would have bought their dolly:)

Hi Joker

I see two drawbacks, the height of the platform and the platform itslelf would have to be altered to accept a tripod.
But the price is right.
Thanks,

You would have to modify the platform as only a hi-hat would fit on that. It is also probably too high. It also doesn't have a pushing handle on it either. That would make it very hard to do a nice dolly move.

I'm all for innovation, but that buggy is getting close to a four-wheeled wheel barrow LOL.
The thing that makes the Matthews dolly particularly good for moves without track is the weight too. And the neumatic tires I have found absorb a surprizing amount or vibration.
I have used it with success on pavement and indoors zipping across ceramic and quarry tile joints. It's an amazing dolly, but I'm to cheap to buy one. Scottish genes?
