dolly zoom?

[Steve Laramie]

is a dolly zoom cliche or corny or can it be respectively used if basically appropriate?

I think you should turn that question into a statement and you have your answer.

[Steve Laramie]

can you elaborate on that one...

A Dolly zoom is usually cliche or corny, but it can be respectively used if appropriate.

That help?

Dolly zooms are very fragile. It's a thin line between horribly cliche and appropriate.

I think it might be the most cliche thing in student films aside from a rack focus and super shallow DOF. But - it can work...maybe? Depends on the production.

[Steve Laramie]

true im going to scratch that idea.

Dolly out and zoom out, or dolly out and zoom in?

Dolly out and zoom out is totally fine. They did it in King of California, if you've seen it, it's where she's reading in the christian science reading room. Anyways, they didn't have enough room to do as big of a move as they wanted, so they added in a bit of a zoom out to their dolly and it didn't look like a zoom and allowed them to end in a much wider frame.

Dolly out and zoom in....eh. Do something else.
