For those looking to have the best dolly product for the best price, consider this:
For wheels, I use the Glideshot inductries swivel set that start at only 209.00
check them out at glideshot.com
for a dolly, if you have 1,100 bucks you can get real doorway dolly from Norms in north Hollywood.
most of us don't that type of dough, so I built mine out of lumber and plywood and used the glideshot wheels listed above.
TRACKS: this is very important. Don't waste money trying to make your own tracks or buying knockoff tracks or micro tracks or lightweight tracks. they are all inferior or overpriced. You can buy a 10' section direct from Norms for 250.00 and thats heavy duty serious industry track that is used for fisher and chapman dollies.
believe me, having a quality dolly and track makes a big difference in getting gigs. and you have 18' of track with a smooth running dolly for only around 700 bucks. Moreover, you clients will ove you and recommend you to others. I actually have 30' of track, 1 - 10', 2 - 8' and 1 -4'. You get track for you money on shorter pieces though.
I've used a ton of home-made dollies and tracks as well as most professional versions and the above is what I feel is the best value for the money and effort.
Please believe me when I tell that out of all the tons of film toys I've bought for my production package, the above is by far the best and most reasonable priced investment in the lot. If you want to do serious filmwork, that is.
