Re: Dolly for Canon XL1?

Im not very talented at building things, especially a dolly. Can someone recommend a prebuilt one that can be purchased? :)

Re: Dolly for Canon XL1?

I just made a dolly (for an XL2, not that it matters) and it was very simple. You can see the thread in the XL2 section.

Looking to spend around $500-800. Im just going to be doing pans and movement around objects against a small greenscreen.

Re: Dolly for Canon XL1?

I'll build you one/ Just need the weight of operator, type/size of tripod, and how long of dolly runs are you needing? (Best to purchase the PVC pipe yourself wherever you are...much cheaper.)
Shipping is the worst thing...being in FlyOver Country, we may be near each other.

Re: Dolly for Canon XL1?

Serioulsy; you can build a solid one for under $200.00 easily and much less if you do your homework and shop around.

That being said?  I don't have much experience with other dollies so maybe someone can chime in with a reccomendation?

Re: Dolly for Canon XL1?

I've been building one - actually, I've been drawing, showing off Hudson's video, and getting parts. My father-in-law is over for a visit, and he is a great handyman - so this gives him something interesting to do while I am slouching over the keyboard.

Got all the parts for about $350 Canadian (which translates to about US $240 plus tax. Hopefully this weekend we'll take her out for a ride. And then... off to the candy store to get the heart-shaped box of cholocates!

John - did you make yours to fit the standard dolly rail width? Cuz I just ignored that - thought that if I actually rent a rail, I'd also rent one of those wheel sets that go under an actual dolly. I just made sure mine would go through a 32" door.

Re: Dolly for Canon XL1?

We specifically made it so that it would fit through a doorway; I think 29" ?

The track is PVC Thick Guage.  Cheap cheap cheap at about $2.00 every 10'

Re: Dolly for Canon XL1?

I had my own rollerblade wheels and bearings so mine only cost around AU$75. I still have to add a handle and maybe put some carpet on it and cups to put the tripod feet in.

It's basically just Barant's except I needed to add two strips of wood so the wheels wouldnt rub on the base of the dolly. Works superbly though
