DOF too shallow

I just shot a music video today and tried out my DIY static adapter in an accetable enviornment.. However I noticed the DOF was too shallow.. I was able to shoot around it, but is the idea to change lenses or f-stop.. I'm using a 50mm canon 1:1.4
Should I be using a 1.8?

I'm shooting the rest of it outside with the actors moving and I need a larger amount of space for them to move around without going out of focus..

1) Open the camera's iris to full open and remove all ND filters

2) Light the scene, you will need a lot of light

3) While monitoring the image, stop down the lense's iris until the depth of focus is what you want. It is completely a matter of taste as to how you want it to look.

4) Use the camera's iris to stop down to the correct exposure.

A mildly soft background will require you to close the lens down quite a bit, so you will need a lot of light.

Did I mention that you will need some serious light?

well I'll be outdoors on the move with no budget.. Hoping the sun is enough light.. Perhaps I should pray for an extra bright day?
