does vegas work w capture card?

I have an ATI all-in-wonder 9800 graphics card, its supposed to support capture through analog signals but i cannot get it to capture in any program other than ati's included software. And that software rarely works correctly. I have a number of people coming to me to take old vhs tapes and remake them to dvd. I really hate using my dvx as a pass through. If i were to buy an aftermarket capture only card would vegas be able to recognize it and capture from it? I see cards on newegg.com for less than $100 and if it would work better than my ati card that is the route i would prefer to go.
My other question is in regards to dv-analog converters. Doesn't this basically do the same thing as a capture card would? But it would allow you to go straight to tape or dvd via a dvd/recorder deck instead of going through your computer first? I've looked at converters a bit but they are all in the $300 range which is more than i'd like to spend.

thanks, jon

Vegas captures through FireWire or Decklink.

Passing the video through your DVX does not harm it in the slightest, nor does it add hours or wear to the heads.

well if using a capture card isn't an option than i suppose thats what i'll have to do as i'm not about to drop $300 on a dv-analog converter. I have heard stories of people burning up firewire and rca ports on the dvx from using it as a passthrough.

If the firewire or RCA plugs were damaged, it's not because of the passthrough. They'd all be doing exactly what they're supposed to be doing. Sounds like urban legends to me.
