Does this mic suck?

Hey, fellas. I am directing my first feature and we have very small financing from a private investor. Is this mic good for a dialogue driven film http://www.adorama.com/NRSA568.html It will be shot mostly on a windy highway. This may sound like a dumb question to you audio pros, but I really want the sound to be good, and am willing to sacrifice other items to make sure the sound is superb. Can you give me a few choices to check out, if this mic is not that good?

Thanks for all your help, and have a great day,

-Kris

Re: Does this mic suck?

If you are shooting on a windy highway I would stay completely away from a shotgun mic. I would use lav mics to record the dialog and then go back with a boon and capture some wild sound that will match the environment. TRAM mics are excellent. That way in post you are can separate the two elements with separate control. I made the similar mistake once and will never do it again. We shot about 90% of a short in a car with a sennheiser shotgun mic and we were just in hell in post when we tried to single out the dialog from the background noise, which was insane.

But arnt I always thought cartiods were not as good outside, so wouldnt a shotgun say the AT897 still be a more versitle mic

Re: Does this mic suck?

honestly, if you are wanting a clean dialogue track, you aren't going to get it filming where the background noise is inconsistent. for example, near a highway or in a moving vehicle.
you will HAVE to replace the dialogue in post.
using a lav (lapel) mic will give you better results than a shotgun, but the sound will be less dynamic than what a quality shotgun can deliver.
so if ADR is not an option, then you will have to use lavs and crank a background track in post in hopes of covering up the inconsistent background everytime you make a cut.
