I have to shoot an event on XL2s next week and I am dreading the whole tape thing. Is there any device that is reasonably affordable that I can go from the camera to a solid state video recorder?
 
Depends on what you mean by "reasonably affordable"; there are compactflash and hard disk recorders with firewire input out there, made by companies like Focus Enhancements and Shining Technologies. I'd think you'd be able to pick up a FireStore off ebay for pretty cheap...
