Does this combo work? Tascan DR 40, splitter and extension cable?

HI,

Trying to help a friend cobble together a sound kit for his shoots. Our hope is to split the headphone signal so he can use headphones and push the audio to his canon t3i.

He is getting the Tascam Dr-40, he has this already (a splitter) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...NL3_5MON_WHH4NL3_5MON_Line_to_Microphone.html

I called BHPhoto trying to find an extension cable. The rep tried to explain to me that I needed an attenuated cable and it would be costly.

But I remembered seeing this rode cable that was used for people booming a rode videmic. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/392841-REG/Rode_VC1_Stereo_Mini_Male_to.html

Would that cable work? It is 10 ft and that should help dual record, right?

Thanks.

Yes, that or one of the Sescom DSLR cables should work. http://goo.gl/QbIkA . I'm not sure exactly which one is recommended for the DR40.
Generally, it's said to keep the length of unbalanced cables under 10 feet.. however your YMMV.
FWIW, the Sescom cables and products are made and distributed by Tower Products (aka, Markertek) in Saugerties, NY.

Thanks! Can I ask what happens with an unbalanced cable? I.e. can it do "bad" things that could damage something? Or is the audio just get degraded? Thanks!

An unbalanced cable is more subject to electrical interference from such things as light dimmers, etc, than is a balanced cable. The longer the cable the bigger the risk of noise. Note that the Rode cable is a simple extension for connecting a mic level output (Rode Videomic) to a mic level input (camera). You will be connecting a much stronger headphone level output to the mic level camera input and there's a very strong possibility of loading the input with too high a signal, hence the need for an attenuating cable in your application.
