does the hv20 have sync issues with seperate audio recording devices?

I have an HV20 and will be recording audio through some form of digital recording device. I was wondering, since the HV20 is a consumer cam, and with all its unique pulldown issues/24p stuff; if I use an exterior recording device (don't know which one yet since I'm not that far down the road), am I going to have trouble syncing it back up in post?

Any recommendations on recording devices to use with this camera?

If you aren't using all that fancy timecode jamming/syncing goodness between your recorder and camera, then you'll have sync issues regardless of the cam or the recorder. That said, if you slate and log every shot the old fashioned way, you should be fine manually syncing scenes that aren't too long.

Exactly, unless you have a timecode generator...which I don't even think you could use with an HV20, since I am 99% sure there is no TC out and in. (Since I personally own an HV20) you won't be able to get the timecodes to sync.

Buy a production slate. Log the shots and the takes, and use a call out.

AKIN to:

Roll Sound
rolling
Call It
Scene 3A, take 1
Roll Camera -- focus on slate
rolling
Marker
camera mark -- clap slate and remove, pull focus back to action
Action

And tada, you have something to work off of. That's how we all do it basically.

And you really won't have any major problems with sync unless you are recording DV, 29.97 for a very extended time. :)

Long take sync can drift with cheap crystals; most pro equipment is pretty accurate. You should be good for up to 10 minutes. To test, put a head and tail slate on a long, say 30 minute, take. Sync head and find difference at tail. From that you can calculate where you will want to make a sync adjustment in your long takes.
