Does SD702T need a mixer?

I'm looking at the sound dev 702T. (not that I can afford it) I'm wondering what advantage the 302 gives or if it is even necessary.

The literature states: "The 702T implements a no-compromise audio path that includes Sound Devices’ next generation microphone preamplifiers."
Then it says: "While the 702T is a very capable recorder by itself, it truly excels when used in conjunction with an outboard audio mixer such as Sound Devices’ own 442 or 302."
Does anyone have an opinion on this?

or if you intend to go to camera with the sound.

Also - high pass, pre-fade, balance, etc are all at your fingertips on the mixer, i think on the 702 there's a bit of fiddling to get access to the features. not sure also if the preamps are a touch better in the mixers.

I have the 702 now and I've realized that for the moment I really have no use for a 302. Everything that I want to accomplish can either be achieved with a boom and a lav or two lavs. I figure I'll save my money for now and spend it on my lighting kit and maybe when I'm ready to make my second feature I'll buy a 442 because by that time I expect to be working with more than 2 lavs.

there is no problem to go to the camera balance outs ( if it like 744 on outs taf-3 balance out connectors )
prefaders - what prefader? - the 7 series has continuous gain structure , if it to high you go to low level setting what attenuate the signal by 20 db , high pass filters are very fast setting with the short cuts.
the only problem is the camera return what might be done with cheap external switching box

jus joking buddy.

I wasn't really crying :)

I just meant that everything is so handy on the mixer, that i find it so much easier than fiddling on my 744

the point me saying about the prefades is just that I can check each channel on its own very easily one or two or three of them together.. and yes I know you can set up all sorts of monitoring preferences on the 744, but that wheel-menu does my nut in sometimes. far prefer the mixer layout. and going to camera would involve 2 ta3 to xlr converters, and two xlrs and a long headphone extension, another headache.

thats 722 not 4 you dont need check each cannel you have 2 only , about taf to xlr -whay? - i have a spesial snake for that - no need to do it ( ok iam quit uniq - i have 6 diferent smakes, i some times use the 744 as a preamp to the camera so send the camera returns to 3and 4 - very easy to check this way :-))
i also prefer the mixer layout but for some one who whants to use this one as mix pre its not a big problem

headphones extention - what is that ?

you have a ta3 to xlr snake? nice.

whats that then, two ta3 and a 3.5mm return on one end, and two xlr and 3.5 on camera end?

the headphone ext i mean for return.

hope we're not hijacking this thread, this is still on-topic, isn't it?

yes you are mate. :D

i have short snakes which goes to 7 pin xlr
so i can deside which configuration and cable length i need , so one of them has 2 taf 3 and pl mini female on return so i can hook it for 744 and send the returns tru taf-3( unbalance configuration) to 2 taf3 3-4 inputs on the 744 or use it as direct outs sending to 2nd camera when the return goes to input b on 442 ( pl-min to pl mini)
i have more in cables then most people in their gear - dont like stupid solutions even it for one time gig

about camera return , you can make very cheap passive switch for headphones

That is the one feature I wish the 744t had; instant channel monitoring, like the DEVA. If I want to go from channel A to D, I don't want to flip thru B and C. It has only been an annoyance a couple of times but still. With the new CL-1 keyboard interface, perhaps they will release a firmware update that allows you to do this via keyboard, 1-4, or user programable.

That would be very sweet and one of the real advantages of the 7xx series, a lot can be added and improved with firmware updates.

Although we are still waiting on that damn firewire optimization since it was first released. :(

soon we shoud be able to use the firewire to go straight to a computer, like a sound card. that'll be nice.

while we're on 7 series annoyances... I'm so pissed that I cant carry on recording in an existing folder simply by selecting it.. you can only name the folder with the same name as the one you want to carry on in.

ie.
if your recording in folder S01D01 and take T01, and you get a chance to record a wildtrack, you have to name a new folder WILD01 then you can record WILD01T01. now to go back to T02 in folder S01D01 you'd have to punch that folder name back in

it would be great to have assigned folders on a shortcut so you can quickly record in differents places. why why oh why.

que oleg to say that you can do this already. That would be nice.
