Does hack still work for unsupported card?

Hi guys,

I just bought a gh13 and need to get a new computer to edit it on.

I was looking at this one here:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=350335092466&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

and upgrading from 6GB RAM to 8. I'll get cs5 as well.

But it has the Nvidia GT240 1 GB card....

*Will this card be supported with the hack?
* Does the hack still work, especially if you upgrade to 5.0.2?
* Anyone have any experience with the GT 240 hacked? Do you need extra fans, etc.?

Any answers to these questions, or any other general advice, would be GREATLY appreciated!

THANK YOU

That system is very over-priced. First off, the GT240 will be the bottleneck in that system. An i7 could do things much faster.

As for the ram, you need to know the layout of those slots. Going from 6 to 8GB might mean all-new ram, that will costs hundreds to upgrade.
Also need to add more HDD's for editing, a 1TB system drive is a complete waste.

I suggest you look around here a bit more for ideal editing systems, you'll find some great ideas.

Building your own computer, to your own specifications, is very rewarding , and cheaper.

That Ebay thing... very, very expensive for something you probably can't upgrade.

Here's what you need for a kick-ass system.
Quad/Hex CPU 3.0ghz. AMD cheaper/slower Intel faster/costly.
Ram: 8GB 800mhz min, only get more if it's the fastest type. 32GB of slow ram is a waste of money.
HDD's Sata-2 , two Raid Zero if you can, 7200rpm is fine.
GTS250 1GB min, as much as the budget will allow. If Adobe ends up fully supporting the new 104 chip, then a pair of GTX 460's in SLI would be killer.

Critical thing is get the right motherboard. My NLE, as it stands right now, is as good as I can make it. Anything I upgrade would get me little performance, and wouldn't be usable in a future system.

As a small one-man shop, I can tell you that ANY problems or issues you have with your editing hardware will haunt you with sleepless nights and missed deadlines.

I don't have the website but there were tests done with the GT 240 and it did add some performance boost.

They stated an 8400 GT an 8800 GT and even the 9400 GT card will not get any perforamce boost. A GT 240 with 1 GB of RAM should work decent but not as good as a GTX 285. If you are on a budget the GT 240 might be your best bet.

I have the 240 with the AzenX Blitztorm cooling fan and it works just fine and performance is pretty decent with the hack. After a couple of hours of editing, the fan really helps. W/out the fan, my system would start to stutter, but with the fan installed, no more problems. That is not an editing system, and a GT240 in an i7 machine, MPE or not, is going to bottleneck everything.

Compare $75-$100 for a GT240 and $210'ish for a GTX460 , seriously, if you don't own a usable CUDA card today, why buy an end-of-life card with practically no MPE advantage?

All I'm saying.

Thanks for everyone's input! Any more suggestions would be appreciated!

@WpgCameraMan:

Thanks for taking the time to provide all that info. The reason I was looking at the 240 was that Simon Hofer runs an i7 with gt240, 860 and 8gb RAM. He says he has no problems playing 5 clips picture in picture:

http://dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=209116&page=2

But I want to get the best (and best value) setup, but living in Australia computers are more expensive than US :(

Would this one be good do you think?:

And how does the 460 compare with the (supported) 285?

THANKS

If you edit HDV or even AVCHD the GT 240 might work out OK. If you need to edit 4k resolution from the Red One camera then perhaps a GTX 285 woud be your best bet if money is an issue. What camera will you be using?
