Does final cut pro have a preview display?

My boyfriend who is a film maker (and is an avid user of this site) uses sony vegas and while I watched over his shoulder I saw he had a live preview screen, so anytime he added an element to the video, he could play it back in real time to experement.

The way I work is I like to experement as I go along (for now at least until I learn the ropes) and my problem is I have Final Cut Pro and NOT vegas. (It's because I have a mac)

So my question is, Does Final Cut Pro have anything like the preview screen that Sony Vegas has? This way I will be able to edit as I go along and try filters and techniques as I see fit.

Also, I am a virgin to Final Cut Pro, is the "Final Cut Pro for dummies" a good start or is there something better?

Thank you for your responses in advance. I truly appreciate it in advance.

Not quite sure what you mean but FCP like all editors has a source window which is called the Viewer and a program window which is called the Canvas.

You might like to try the Apple Pro Training Series. There are different books for different versions of FCP, but they all take you through a series of lessons. At the end of the book you should have a pretty good working knowledge of editing with FCP.

Final Cut Pro for Dummies is a decent reference book but the Apple book is (IMO) better for learning to edit from scratch on FCP.
