Does anyone know how youtube works in this case?

I and another filmmaker were thinking of putting together some youtube videos where we as filmmakers talk about scenes from movies and we break them down and discuss them. However, whenever I try to upload a clip from a movie to youtube, it always gets blocked for copyright reasons, understandably. But other people with youtube channels are able to upload copyright movie clips to their channels, no problem. Especially youtube shows that talk about movie making and show the scenes. Do they have a special permit to do so, that you have to get, or something like that?

There are ways to do it, and ways not to do it.

Best way is to make an account with one of the promo clearing houses and study the rules. The other way is to claim fair use, but keep in mind it doesn't always work. And it will pretty much always trip you up.

Not sure how other channels are doing it, but movie review is one thing that we can't stream from work. Some of the companies go straight to copyright claim which can shut you down for 6 months, with no way to appeal. Warner Bros. is one of the worst, Disney next in line.
