Does anyone drink when they write?

Jordan - use to mediate for over a decade and did yoga the same. Most people walk around with an incredible amount of background noise in their heads - full of thoughts and crap. I don't. Meditations clears the mind. Jerry Seinfeld practices 15 minutes a day on the sofa with palms up - seriously.

I recommend it for writers because you need to clear your mind.

To the original poster about drinking, sure a lot of famous people did it, but they lived miserable lives those famous writers. I don't recommend it. Drink coffee as stated but not booze.

I am one of those people with the background noise! I have tenitis (sp?) and ADD, so I have not only the ringing noise that demands that I have some background noise in the room, but also I need some sort of "medication" to stop all the white-noise of thought stirring through my skull... Sometimes it helps me to focus on one writing and not the laundry, the car, the noise of the upstairs neighbor, the truck driving by, etc...

If my mind were a blank slate, I wouldn't have anything to write about. I think "meditation" is stupid personally, but whatever works for you is great for you. For me personally, that would be an absolute waste of time. I think about all kinds of issues and philosophies throughout the day, I don't need to meditate to bring anything out. It's more or less sitting somewhere like a bump on a log doing nothing.

Jon - I don't think it's cool to state meditation as stupid. Medical doctors even recommend a form of mediation for patients with anxiety disorders. It's been proven to have a calming effect on the body.

With clarity of thought the mind swims into imagination. As long as you have a ton of background noise, you battle your imagination with your mind.

Any martial arts master will tell you to learn stillness is to find peace. I don't think again it's cool to dismiss something that's universally accepted as beneficial as stupid.

This is, again, why I say reading is fundamental. What did I write? That I think meditation is stupid personally, but whatever works for you is great for you. I never said it was stupid universally, for everyone, and therefore without merit. I said personally -- personal meaning FOR ME. I don't know how i could have made that any more obvious, to be honest. Should I have written it in six different languages? I'm sorry but it really does help to read before you respond.

And no, I don't find any benefit for me, I have two black bets, and yes it's important to be able to clear your mind of doubts or frustrations sometimes to focus on what is at hand, but that does not require meditation for me. If it does for other people, great, like I said whatever works for you, that's what you gotta do, but for me I don't need to meditate to focus. I'm a big fan of everyone having their own approach to work ethic, problems, challenges, etc. You have to figure out what routine works for you and go with it, and everyone's is a bit different. But I have a lot of time each and every day to think about life, the universe, and everything ;) I don't need any specific meditation or just sitting on a mat for 15 minutes doing nothing. I accept that such an approach may work great for others.

...I have two black bets...
As in Roulette?? Wow. Even I can't write while I gamble...

I asked about TM because I don't know much about it at all. The closest I've come to meditating is while lying on my back on the floor in the dark, listening to Trane's Interstellar Space.

That is, until my wife barged in and was like, "WTF?"

I started TM back in January. I think it helps with writing and creativity, but it is not like you meditate for the first time and suddenly you're full of ideas. It's more of a tool to help you reach your potential.

If you're curious about it you could check out their site or the David Lynch foundation site.

Jon - You should be more careful how you write. "I think meditation is stupid personally" - if you post that on any blog it will come off sounding as though you believe meditation is stupid, period.

Whatever works for you, great, as long as it works. Chuck Norris meditates. Bruce Lee use to meditate. Maybe, that helped them become champions at what they did.

Back to original post - drinking while writing. If you are going to drink, try clear liquors as opposed to colored ones, less likely to have hangover according to San Jose article I read years ago. I wouldn't know. I don't drink.

Whatever you do, keep writing.

I used to drink a lot when I was younger, but I never wrote drunk, and I didn't want to. I drank/used drugs to shut off the creativity, not inspire it. I think if you look at writers (real ones) they'll generally say the same thing. Eventually the drugs take over and then you're well and truly ****ed. To all those functional users out there, keep up the good work.

That's not my problem if someone doesn't know how to read properly. It's the same with people taking offense to this or that -- I'm not altering my behavior to make your day better, haha, sorry! If someone takes offense by something, that's their problem and I'm going to let it be their problem, not make it mine.

I certainly have the right to dislike or like whatever I feel like, regardless of how anyone else feels about it, and I am not going to apologize for my opinions about anything, especially something as silly as meditation. I'm a thoughtful guy, obviously, I majored in philosophy, but meditation doesn't really mean anything to me. It's just the notion of sitting around doing nothing pretending to clear your mind or something. That's called sleep, and I do it every night ;)

Everyone in our society pussyfoots around nowadays not to offend anyone, and it's really annoying. Like, "In my opinion, Twilight is a really stupid franchise, but that's just what I think personally." How annoying is that sentence? It should be simply: "Twilight is a really stupid franchise." It's IMPLIED by the fact *I* am writing the post that it's an opinion, and if someone is so stupid they can't figure that out they don't deserve to be posting online at all. I love it when someone says, "You are saying that like it's a fact!" Every opinion should be stated strongly, it's part of the principles of good debate actually, and you'd never get away with writing "in my opinion" in a formal paper because it's obvious it's just your opinion by the little line at the top that says "By John C. Smith" or whatever. People need to buckle up, grow a pair of testicles, and learn that the world doesn't need to worry about hurting your feelings. This isn't 3rd grade :)
