Does Adobe not like Australians??

Just received an email about the US stores Creative Cow/Adobe offer of Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Premium at a price of:

$719 US = $778.192 Aussie Dollar

i thought 'you beauty!!' but then discovered to buy it here at the local Adobe store costs:

$1419 Aussie Dollars

I guess there is some tax in there and import costs....but $778 versus $1419 from the two stores??

That is a decent mark up!!

Maybe winning the America's cup in '83 and breaking a 132 year winning streak was not such a clever idea after all! :undecided

It's because we're so good looking... I can't back that up.

I'd say at least three quarters of my film gear including editing software etc has come from the states.

As long as the total value - including shipping is under 1000 aussie dollars you won't have a problem with customs.

Will the American store let me buy it there??

I assumed they'd block that kind of sale...hmm..you've given me hope!

Will they take your money? God Yeah.

Like I said though, just keep it under 1 grand AUS to avoid customs. If paying by credit card only use stores you know are legit, I've dealt with B&H photo, Specialized communications etc with no problems.

Just as another example, I got Edius Broadcast 4 from Spec-comm for AU $800 - it's about $1200 here in Oz.

Get used to shopping in the states.

Mavoz, is the production premium the right package you're after? I think there's a Master Collection that is the best of the best. Just double check as I'm not sure.

Thank you! Certainly opening up all sorts of new possibilities there..that spec-comm site is cheaper on all sorts of gear...mics etc.

Is there any issue in terms of warranties/legality/ethics in buying software and hardware like this overseas?

ie. Is my Adobe Upgrade serial number not going to work because I have bought it from the States?

(PS The price of the Master Collection in the US isn't far off the price of the Production premium in Australia...so that sure is tempting!)

Also hope you weren't too effected by those floods tmnt!

I'd just make very sure you know exactly what the differences are in each package. You don't want to save a few bucks and miss out on key features.

I'm not sure how warranty goes with software but I'd be really surprised if there restrictions - I'd shoot off an email to be sure. Of course with hardware you're rolling the dice. In most cases if your stuff breaks within the warranty period (which is only a year half the time anyway) you'd have to ship it back overseas, so realistically you'd have to fork out the money and get it fixed here. As you know though, the price difference is so massive in most cases that it's more than worth the gamble.

Luckily I'm in a two level house, had two or three inches of water downstairs and a roommates car got completely flooded. My boss lost a couple cars and his whole house flooded. I got off scott free really. thanks

Aren't the import taxes on this from Australia? Looks like the Australian Gov't doesn't like Aussies. At any rate I love Australia. Only place I'd rather live than here.

Yeah the import taxes are courtesy of the friendly folks at customs. I'm not entirely sure why there are such price descrpencies between here (and many other countries) and the States but I have absolutely no problems ethically sending my money out of the country - remember the money's going to B&H photo, not a dealer here.

I think the customs money goes toward the Governments christmas party.

Yeah it's a nice country with a lot to see. I'd love to live in L.A to do film stuff and I think NY would be pretty great. How's Vegas?

yeah don't worry if I go to the US online store to place an order, and enter my address (SOUTH AFRICA), Adobe software is all of a sudden about 25% more expensive. eg. $1000 becomes $1250.

I FEEL YOUR PAIN !!!

I have not bought software but all of my camera gear has come from the states except the camera's. Have saved a crapload of money and so long as the dollar is good i will keep buying. Although its suprising that since our dollar is doing so well that the camera gear prices have not dropped so we keep getting ripped off.

Today the AUS dollar to US is the strongest in a lot of years. Think it's creeping to .94c. That 16gb card is looking better...
