does a movies' appeal depend on who you watch it with?

So I noticed lately that when I watch movies, a big factor in whether I like it or not depends on who I'm sitting next to in teh theater or at home. Like sometimes I will see a movie with one person, and hate it, and then watch it again with a different person/people, and its like a completely different movie.

Is it like this with anyone else?

Have you ever been to a sporting event where you're one of the few people cheering for your team? Compare that to the vibe you get when everybody is rooting for your favorite team. I think it's the same thing with movies in a way.

Now if you're talking about watching a porno, that's a different story!:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I really noticed this with comedies. If I am watching a comedy alone it is not nearly as funny as when someone else is there. I watched the first half of Zoolander by myself and didn't find it that funny. When my roomate came in and watched the second half I started to laugh. Still don't find it the funniest movie but the added laughter helped make it better.

Comedies that I found funny when I watched alone are "Dr. Strangelove". "Young Frankenstein", "Spaceballs", Wedding Crashers".

A comedy that might have been helped by an added audience is "Napoleon Dynamite" I think I am one of the very few who didn't think this was that funny.

Absolutely. You dont watch Land of the Dead with your wife and 3-year old kids, or you mom, or anyone. It would make it awkward, and you would worry, and it would lose effect.

And Alex dePew, I saw Napoleon Dynamite twice, and dispite the praise, I thought it was the worst thing that could have ever been made.

I think Napolean Dynamite is a movie ripe for a RHPS-esque audience participation plan! :)

I almost never enjoy a movie as much with someone as I do by myself. I am usually concerned with whether they like the movie, instead of just watching it and enjoying the movie. Plus, I like to sit where I want and like to feel free to get up and leave in the event the movie totally stinks. Another thing, I dont even know if I laugh out loud at funny movies when I am alone. I'm trying to think if I do. I know I do when there are other people around, but I think I just laugh in my head when I am alone.

Or maybe I make the same sound as the tree falling in the woods when no one is there to hear it....

My movie watching experience is personal on the first view and I watch at home in my studio. The door is closed and phone off the hook. I get the whole home theater experience with no interuptions...The only frames I miss are those that go by when I blink. After I've seen It, I like to watch with others for the second time. I then pick who I watch with knowing what kind of film they Like. The reason for this is that most people I find far too fidgety and that is a distraction for me. I like to be totally Imersed in the film with no one jumping up to get the phone or disapearing to make a snack or asking the cat if it is a good kitty during the slow parts.
