hey guys I will be handling a number of interviews this year using two DVX100A's, also have two sets of sennheiser evolution wirelss lavs(one ME2 & one ME4 mic).

They are two shot interviews(usually with two subjects). I was wondering what would be the best advice on capturing the best audio and if I should add anything else to the set up ex. field recorder, dat recorder shot gun, etc.

Any advice on brands and set up would be appreciated.
Also keep in mind I am traveling to diffent cities. Thanks

Re: Documentry interview

Make sure the mics are not in contact with things like hair or clothing that it will rub against.

make sure air conditioning, even humm producing appliances are OFF. listen carefully for anything in the backgroudn that will ruin your pristine audio. ( car horn, door slam)

For really, really important stuff, I often use backup standalone recorders..sometimes the audio is cleaner, sometimes it is easier to eddit with later or to preview the audio without caputuring the whole
video-audio interview.

iriver 790 t? I think that is one thing I use. I'm sure there more much more higher end recorders out there, but this works for me.

Re: Documentry interview

It sounds like you already have a good interview setup, other than the fact you have one omni lav (ME2) and one cardioid lav (ME4). So, I would consider buying a second ME2, so you have two omnis. Omni lavs are a much better choice unless you're working with trained talent. You should also be matching the mics so you have a consistent sound when cutting between the two. I would also not rely exclusively on wireless sets, they're *generally* reliable, but are much more prone to interference and other problems. If you can afford it, a good shotgun or cardioid mic would really bbe helpful. In general, I think it's preferable to boom interviews if you can. The quality of the sound will be better and the setup is a whole lot quicker. Maybe an AT897 or AT4073a depending on your budget.

Thanks alot guys! I will be getting a ME2 this week, I was actually thinking that would be a problem. I had ordered the ME4 to try it out.

Thanks

PS-love the book Barry

Re: Documentry interview

I would feed each camera's subject lav into that camera on channel 1. Then I would boom with a hypercardioid or short shotgun and feed that mic to both cameras on channel 2. With a two shot the hypercardioid is much preferred. You can use the hyper as the preffered mic unless there is a lot of ambient noise, then use the lavs. Also try blending the two mics together IN POST and see what works.
