Documentary Work?

Hey all-
Been a member of this board for about a year, not to frequent a poster-But wanted to float something out there and see if anyone had any guidance. I'm looking to move away from the word of cable news and short package driven journalism, and into the longer form, documentary film production world. I've scoured the internet, and come across a handful of places for documentary filmmakers-Does anyone have any suggestions for places to peruse in attempts to jumpstart the process of finding work with production houses/story developers, etc? Just curious, I know work in this world isnt exactly posted like that of an ad sales rep, or a normal 9-5 type job, just wondered if anyone had any advice! Im getting more and more jaded by work everyday, and trying to cut the cord at some point! Thanks so much, hope everyone has a good week!

Frustrated And Looking

Here are a couple places where doc producers hang out online:

The D-Word: http://www.d-word.com/
It's sort of like a DVXuser for documentary filmmakers. You'll need to register (free) to see the discussion threads.

And also Shooting People: http://www.shootingpeople.org
There's an annual membership fee on this one, and it's New York/London centric. But every day they send out an email with posts about camera ops needed, editors needed, etc.

Good luck.

hey plexi, are you on d-word? I am as well. What a great site. I actually hooked up with a PBS production and am ACing on their series this week via d-word.

i'm on it occasionally, but i don't post or anything. doug block, the guy who founded it, is a great documentary filmmaker, and genuinely interested in furthering the doc cause. that's awesome that you got a PBS gig through it!

It is a great site, a real great place to mingle with others fighting the same fight most doc producers face. Money, time, resources, etc. Ive been a member for a few months actually, I visit it everyday.....

yea. no offense to DVXusers but when i have time to spend online, i spend a lot more on D-word then here. Lately i've been mostly focusing on doc projects and honestly the "doc" section on here is pretty weak and not that thought provoking.
