Documentary Questions

I like so many others, I have an idea for a documentary. I am inexperienced in producing a documentary and I am looking for some advice.

- I would like to direct this doc but I would like help with funding (obviously), producing, and distribution.

I have been blindly searcing the internet for various routes to get a documentary produced. I have checked out the Sundance Doc Grants, PBS, various production companies like Participant Productions, but I am still not sure what I should set my goal towards.

However unlikely it would be to try to submit a proposal and perhaps a small trailer to a production company to try to get funding or the project picked up, where is a good place to start? Most companies will not accept unsolicited material, how can I find an agent/manager/lawyer who could help formalize such a submission.

Anyone who is currently seeking funding, in production, or has finished a funded documentary any help would be appreciated.

ps* I have experience shooting doc's and scripting but I am looking for advice on funding and possible distribution.

You need a producer, pure and simple. A good producer will prepare a budget for you, help you secure funds either through grants, sponsorships, private gifts or other avenues.
