Documentary Funding in the UK

I have looked around but I can't seem to find many options to apply for documentary funding in the UK. I had some interest from a sponsor who offered to fund the entire project at £6000. We agreed terms and everything however I haven't since received a reply. Therefore I am looking for alternative methods of funding. I am planning to fund as much as possible out of my own pocket as it is something that means a lot to me.

Basically the idea of the documentary is to showcase the work of organisations, NGOs and community projects set up by Thai and Burmese people working on the Thai-Burmese border. The aim of the documentary is to veer away from the eurocentric thinking that many documentaries about NGOs can often take and highlight what the local people are doing to help each other.

I have tried every possible pathway I can think of and have even set up a crowd funding page and even though I have sent it to other 5000 people personally nothing has come about from that.

I have had equipment donated from some top companies such as rycote, think tank, peak design and beachtek but I still have some way to go. If I can't get funding, the project will still go ahead and I will have to use what I currently own to do the best I can possibly do, however the quality of the documentary will obviously suffer. Considering this cause means a lot to me I want to give it the best possible chance of succeeding and producing something that will do these people justice. Does anybody know of any source in the UK that I could apply to?

Hiya, I can't really help, but I am interested in how you managed to achieve the donations that you did in the form of equipment, as you are doing a documentary but it doesn't sound like it's entirely a charitable one. Anyway did they ask for any business plan kind of idea, from you to show your desired project?

I'm only asking because I'd love to create some documentaries...

Have you tried applying for Channel 4's Real Films? - they provide funding for some documentaries: http://britdoc.org/real_funds/

We're currently looking for completion funding for our documentary (for post-production), and you're right it's not easy. One way we're looking to raise money is through self-distribution of a previous documentary we made for a low cost - using camera, mike and Figrig only. If the story is really engaging then that's all you need in some cases.

Hello Sycrid, I don't understand how it isn't a charitable one? My last project in the area has raised £££s and I took 0% from that. It took me probably 20 weeks of my time working on it full time for 4-5 weeks and then the other working around studying and working to buy more kit for this time. Surely that is pretty charitable (not wanting to bang my own drum)? However this time I want to do something on a much bigger scale. I have had offers for funding but people always want a massive chunk (quite understandable) of the money and I can't allow myself to do that as I am trying to keep it 100% profit to the area I was working in.

Thank you for your suggestion, I have pretty much decided that I am going to self fund it as well as I can. I will just have to beg, steal and borrow, and so far it is going pretty well! I feel this is the best way to keep the money with the people I want to help. Thanks again

Jake
