I'm currently in the process of putting together a demo reel specifically for pitching a couple of documentary ideas. Here's my questions:
1. Mixing SD with HD.
I will be using footage from a 16mm doc I directed, captured from miniDV at 29.97. I don't have access to a higher quality source. The rest of my footage will be HD 720p24 from my HVX. The problem, of course, is the difference in both frame rate and resolution. I've decided to go with 29.97, as the frame rate change isn't as noticeable on the HD footage. In regards to resolution, i'm not sure if I should downgrade the HD or up-res the SD. Any thoughts?
2. Aspect Ratio.
16:9 or 4:3? Which will a potential employer more likely be viewing your reel in?
3. Content.
My reel consists of a few shot docs, a short fictional film and a music video. I want to capture my ability to shoot documentary interviews AS WELL as my ability to shoot interesting b-roll. Should I use entire sections of interview clips and seperate them with b-roll set to music?
4. Background Music.
Most people seem to set their reels to one track of music. Here's the problem: Not all of my footage is clean. There's background music to some of the intervies, which will compete against my 'demo soundtrack'. Should I just fade the 'demo soundtrack' out and let the interviews play on their own?
Hope this all makes sense. Any advice is much appreciated.
