Ive finally finished shooting the first three parts of my documentary series. Now into the grading phase. So... These images work for you guys? Throw your opinion out there, doesnt mean I will follow it, but all food for thought.

The first image is lovely with the bluish background punctuated by lights. The big, bright light just off the woman's forehead is a bit distracting. Any way to tone that one down?

The third image (all of them actually) seem to not be white balanced. The cup, which I presume is white, doesn't look white. Perhaps this is a look you are going for.

What is the subject of the doc?

Cheers

I can assure you the white balance was undertaken and adjusted per the image I was after.

Cheers Zak. Good enough for me then.

Noel,

How long is your documentary. wonder if you have time to do stuff like this:

I saw this tutorial and it really blew me away. I mean it all makes sense, but its one of those things that you just have to see it and hear someone tell it to you anyway before the lightbulb clicks.

The images, and tone, hue look great, but for that final touch, using color grading as a storytelling tool might help out a bit. Like using a mask to lighten the center of the frame and darken the outer parts of it. This would bring the viewers eye to your subject. Also brightening up the eyes, etc..

I mean this would be a long process if its a long documentary, but if you have the time, I think it would benefit from it.

Luis I beat you to it! But thanks for the input.

On my final grade I masked her skin tones and lifted the mids on those only. Does look better. Though Im still going to check that link. Doing processes like this is so much easier with COLOR.

EDIT: Thats a sweet link Luis, thanks for that. Color is pretty similar in its workflow, being able to create 7 secondary masks and grading those areas only. Some quick good ideas in there, which is exactly what I was after.

Check this for comparison - Ill tweak this a bit because im not happy with the amount of hair detail lost, but you get the idea.

no problem. glad you liked it. I keep sending people to it because its so simple yet so elusive unless you see it.

Obviously its an artform and some will be better than others but just watching someone do it gives you an idea of where to start.

If you come up with something new after watching the link, I'd like to see.

Thanks,
Luis
