Do you use makeup artist?

Personally I find talents look a lot better on screen with makeup. My question is: do most of you hire a markup artist, or do you just ask the talents to work on their own makeup? I am particularly concern about inexperienced male talents, since they more likely than not know nothing about makeup.

IMHOP make up and wardrobe, two vastly undervalued areas of low budget productions. Too much make up can absolutely kill a scene, a stray zit can do the same.

i used a make up artist on the short i'm working on. and now i don't ever want to work without one again.she happened to own her own salon but trying to break in to the film industry as a make up artist so we basicly did eachother a favor meaning it was a non paying gig for her.also she had a great personalty and got along great with the whole cast.i used craigs list to find her.

Last makeup girl I used (LA area) cost me $100 per day plus a $25 per day kit fee. This was about the going rate. And she did have to use lots of kit because our actors were supposed to be on a beach and thus sweaty.

I would never consider doing anything of any value sans makeup.

I use one. $100 a day is a pretty good rate, but you can find talented people for about half that, if you look around. If you're around the Carolinas/Georgia, I'd happily recommend someone I worked with who was fantastic... I wish I could have her on all my shoots.

I'm married to one, so I'm a bit spoiled. Even so, for men i just have a little cover up and powder on set. For women, once the intial makeup is done for the day we release the makeup artist. She teaches the actor or one of us how to do the touch-ups before she goes. If you work this way, you can save money on rates as well as meals. A lot of makeup artists will help you out for very little money if you don't make them sit around on set all day.
If you have a budget, a stylist on set is money well spent.

You can get free makeup artists from any makeup school like John Casablancas. Lots of recent grads will even supply their own gelatine and other materials in return for great footage for their demo reel/portfolio.

This was for a music video for a friend's band (Decree- In Vain)

I didn't shoot it
